Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad November December 2012 Exhibit

The newest exhibit at the Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad is titled “Full Deck – A Short History of Skate Art.

Skate Art at the Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad CaliforniaThe city-owned Cannon Art Gallery has a fine reputation for the breadth and depth of its exhibits; “National quality with a regional focus. Variety and balance. Introduction of new work to the region. Engaging new audiences” [from exhibit marketing piece] are some of the primary goals f the gallery and they are met admirably.

In this newest exhibit, “Full Deck,” over 275 skateboards, skate decks, photos and art from the 1960s to the present adorn the walls of the Cannon Art Gallery, a vivid reminder of the individual self-expression found in skate boarding itself.

Skate Art at the Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad California

A skateboard collection from the early 60’s, plus rare commercial skate decks are just some of the unique finds at this exhibit, open to the public until December 30, 2012. Distinctive displays of the visual arts are common in the skate boarding culture in the skateboards, as well as in multimedia including music, clothing, video, advertising, painting and much more.

The “Full Deck” exhibit is an amazing statement about that culture so prevalent here in Southern California, and so closely linked to surfing.

It would he a crying shame to use any of these boards.  This is definitely apropos of the area.

What a great exhibit. Might be a first to hear young children asking their parents to take them to an art exhibit

Jeff, my kids boards would be wrecked!  These are so cool that the boards were collected as 'art work' because they are of a certain era...my kids had them in the 90's...i remember trying them and just doing okay...my son got a compressed disc from all the pounding & ramp banging he did...it is not an easy sport on the knees or back...great share.

Skate boarded when it first came out and I wiped out badly and never went back...but those few short moments were bliss

well that took me back a few decades.  I'd love to see that exhibit.  Wish our boys were still out that way, they would have loved it.

William - and you should visit. It's pretty cool and an avenue of art I suspect many, except skate boarders and skate board artists, are not really aware of

Jane - clearly some were used but others were created by commercial enterprises

Lenn - poer the gallery they did have pretty good attendance, especially st the open studio event the day after the openings - plenty of skateboarders in the courtyard in attendance.

Brian - ha ha, I suspect you're right. Skate baording is very popular here and my undertsanding is that many of these are produced by the best known and popular companies and artists.

Michael - well I certainly never thought about it. It was pretty impressive.

Ginny - yeah, you would hate to aactually use these wouldn't you. I never tried boarding and don't plan to. I could probably stand on one if I needed too. LOL.

Richie - well I prefer to enjoy watching it rather than trying. I would definitely wipe out and probably break something.

Interesting "canvas".  This must be something new in the skate world, as a house I previewed yesterday had a young girl spray painting a skateboard deck which she was going to give her brother as a Xmas gift.

She was painting on a very complex design...  I guess I am getting a little too old.

Tammy - well you can at least pass along the post. I also uploaded the video to YouTube. I was pretty impressed and I am not even a skate boarder.

Thanks, Hannah. It was fun to see and photograph.

Dave - have at it.

Gary - well that is pretty ironic. I had no clue all this existed myself.

Thank you, Adam. It was fun to write about

Erica - the arts are pretty impressive here, and getting more so all the time.

Jeff, those boards don't look like any skateboard I ever saw in the '60's. Back then I made my own board in wood shop...have to admit it was pretty cool, but not as nice as the one's above.
