Have you thought about your 2013 resolutions yet? Thanksgiving is over, black Friday is behind us and so is Cyber Monday. Before you know it, Christmas will be here and that only gives you a week to decide whether 2013 is going to be the year of resolutions or regrets. So what’s it going to be for you?
Resolutions tend to always turn into regrets when you only think about self improvement items. For example, every year I am consistent with the same resolution as millions of others. I’m going to lose weight. I do…then I gain it back like everyone else which makes my resolutions turn into regrets. But one resolution to consider, but is rarely on anyone’s list at this time, is to start planning to buy a home. It’s still a great time to do that and with proper planning now, it can easily be achieved.
There are a lot of steps that need to be taken when buying a home. One of which is frequently overlooked: planning. Failure to plan could turn this years’ resolution into a big regret for you. Planning now can impact when you are able to purchase or even how much you are able to purchase.
Consider these facts from About.com on 2011 Holiday Spending:
- Consumers spent $35.3 billion online;
- 18% of gift purchases were gift cards;
- On December 26, there were $7.1 billion in sales
We were still spending money even though Christmas was over!! WHAT?????
Simply put, one of the biggest mistakes we do is overspend during the holidays. While it’s so very easy to do, if you are spending money on credit cards, your debt goes up, and if you are spending your cash that you’ve saved, you are jeopardizing having the money you could need for things like home inspections and credit reports. How will you ever buy that home?
This year, I’m suggesting that you don’t let those resolutions turn into regrets and talk with a RealtorÒ or a loan officer and get your financial house in order now so that next year you can plan that big party at your new home…I’m sure that’s a resolution you could live with!!
