Bullying Education in School. Golf at Palencia to help Children.

Over the past few years we've been hearing more and more about bullying among our youth. While bullying has been around since the beginning of time, technology increases the pain that some children feel. Where they used to be able to come home and get away from it, social media, cell phones, and other various online connections mean that children rarely have a chance to escape.

Staggering Statistics on Childhood Bullying.

In the time that it takes you to read this blog,
  • Two children will be bullied on nearby playgrounds, and more will be bullied online
  • One child will attempt suicide as a direct result of being bullied
  • 95 kids will be physically or sexually abused or neglected
  • One person will call the National Human Trafficking Hotline
  • A child, under the age of 7, will search for porn online.
The Monique Burr Foundation for Children, Inc provides school based prevention programs through education. The two hour course is administered in classrooms for children grades 1 - 5 at no charge to Florida public schools. The foundation hopes to provide the program to all public elementary schools throughout Florida. The cost of this program is approximately $2 per child, meaning that for less than a cup of Starbucks, you can help educate a child on how to prevent or handle abuse and bullying.

Melissa, our youngest son was the target of bullying in junior high school and I know first hand how painful this is for the child and parents. Will check out this Foundation and good for Palencia for partnering with them for the Fundraiser. Hope to see you next week :)

Sharon - I'm sorry for your son. We've had to contact the school board with both of my daughters because they witnessed bullying - once actually by one of their teachers along with students. It was infuriating.

If you like, I can put you in touch with the local foundation.

I have next week on my calendar and am really hoping that I can attend!!

I don't understand why the parents cannot simply take away the technology.  Hard to bully someone online if they don't have an online presence.  Seems like the smart phone is the new babysitter and thus the problems.

Rob - your comment frustrates me, to be honest. While, unlike Sharon, I've never had a child bullied, I've had several conversation with school board members after my daughters, in different schools witnessed it happening.

WHY DO PEOPLE FEEL THAT THE RESPONSIBILITY LIES ON TAKING AWAY FROM THE ONE BEING BULLIED?

1) Why should the child being bullied not be able to use a smart phone, get on facebook, or in a case that happened to my daughter's friend, why was she removed from her class to sit in at study hall vs getting to hang out and interact in the classroom with the students who were not bullying?

2) The information put out online on facebook, twitter, or other social media sites will be around the rest of time. The child being bullied, will still have that out there on the internet, true or not, until they die. How does keeping them off a smart phone or laptop fix that?

3) As a parent, I give my child these devices, not to babysit, but because they have to do homework on them, they have an opportunity to interact, and educate themselves in so many ways. If my child isn't misbehaving on it, but someone else's is, why do I punish her?

4) How many working parents don't know this is going on? How many working parents need these devices to be sure that their child can be reached while they are at work?

I saw an interesting photo on G+ today. While I'm not a feminist, I stayed home and raised my children, having only a 1 car household as long as we could sustain it, it said, "Feminism is important because my freshmen orientation included, "how not to get raped" instead of "don't rape" education.

The solution is to teach others that this behavior is not acceptable, then punish them when it does (and possibly their parents who let it go on, or the school system that does nothing).
