For those houses that are dark and gloomy, adding light is the answer.   Try adding skyllights, which when open can in addition to providing more light also provide ventilation.   Don't neglect to add BIG windows for best views.  

While your considering views, add a grouping of windows to maximize on a less obstructed view.  
                                                                                                                            

 One of the best ways to accessorize fixed windows is to add small windows that open above or below your fixed window.  Tall windows also add height to a room and offer the best ventilation.  And avoid tinted windows, instead use shades for windows which face west, east and south.
