Located 50 miles southwest of Chicago, the Village of Oswego is situated on the banks of the Fox River in the northeast corner of Kendall County. First settled in 1833 and later incorporated in 1852, Oswego is the Mohawk Indian word meaning "mouth of the river".
The village of Oswego began where the Waubonsee Creek meets the Fox River. Today, the Oswego Public Library occupies a prime view of the creek at the north end of Main Street. Downtown Oswego features several shops and restaurants and retains the quaint small town feel of days past. However, in recent years the Village has grown to over 30,856 residents as it was one of the fastest growing towns in the country in the early part of the 2000's.
Oswego features a top notch golf at the Fox Bend Golf Course, several miles of riverfront parks and walking paths and the popular Prairiefest Summer Festival (usually Father's Day weekend).
The village also features a wide range of businesses from the locally famous Dairy Hut in downtown Oswego to newer national chains such as Wal-Mart and Meijer. There is something for everyone to do in Oswego.
Oswego Community School District 308 is also a highly regarded district and serves over 17,000 students in 21 schools. Over 84% of Oswego students meet or exceed state standards on standardized tests (compared to 74% statewide). Oswego is home to 2 high schools where teams compete for bragging rights, the Oswego High School Panthers and Oswego East High School Wolves.
