Cynthia,

This looks like a wonderful canoe/kayak trail....do alligators attack in the water too or just on land? I might be afraid of tipping my canoe or kayak and being attacked by an alligator...or do they mostly stay near shore?

I imagine the scenery along there is beautiful.....

Cynthia, I kayak and canoe and I'm not too sure about alligators. I don't paddle quite fast enough for them! I've heard that if you're in the water you're ok.

I was ready to sign up until I read about the alligators.  It does seem like a great way to see nature at its finest!

Cynthia, wonderful area. I really would like to visit someday. Never been there. AND, just for you, I related the story of Superstition Mountain. Stop by for a look if you haven't already been there.

Hi Everyone,
I'll get back to all of you individually later (I'm not supposed to be working while here....shhhh!).  Funny how so many have commented on the alligators.  Lots of people canoe/kayak this river....I've never heard of any bad encounters with the alligators.

This looks like a very fun day. I like being out on a canoe, because the cell phone is not in use for hours. How relaxing that is to me.

Cynthia, sounds like a fun activity to go for a canoe or kayak adventure on the New River.  It's been quite some time since I've gone in a canoe.  I used to enjoy paddling on the Charles River outside of Boston.  There are lots of kayakers in the D.C. area who enjoy paddling on the Potomac, and some who brave the treacherous waters around Great Falls.

Hello Jo,
Thank you for the recognition of this post in the Localism Success and Accountability Group.  You have me working hard.  :0)

Hi Linda,
I do not kayak or canoe but I think I would enjoy this beautiful trip down the New River.  Those who have done this many times tell me you say an occasional alligator sunning on the shore but they do not bother or pay much attention to the boaters.  (I guess the food supply is plentiful).

Julie,
I have not  been on the paddle trail but am  planning to do it when the weather is warmer.

Hi Ginger W.
Oh come on, be adventurous....what's a few alligators among friends?  LOL.

Hello Teri,
You would love my area and I know I would love yours as well.  Thanks for the story behind the name.

Carole,
The paddle trail is very popular...a great way to get away.

Irina,
As I have said to others, from all the information I have heard....the alligators are not a problem.

Hi Susan,
If you enjoy canoing, you should come on down and explore the paddle trail, I understand it is  great.

Darleen,
Yes, there are alligators in eastern N.C.  I grew up in Pine Knoll Shores across the street from the ocean and there was (is) a canal behind my parents house.  We saw alligators in there quite often, actually we didn't see them unless they came on shore to sun.  Also, there has always been resident alligators at the golf course.  The most famous one, Charlie, wandered across the street at times and up on people's decks/porches.

Hi Brian,
I've never canoed but I plan to give it a try this Spring.  Yes, I have seen the kayakers on the Potomac and Great Falls.

Cynthia:

You and all your friends are welcome to paddle with us anytime. We even have extra canoes and kayaks for you.

We will be paddling this trail as soon as Brian Wheat, The New River Keeper tells us it has been cleared of newly fallen trees. We paddle every week year round.

Alligators are more scared of us than we are of them. They scatter the minute they hear or see us.

Please check our web site:     www.whiteoakstewards.org  Yes, we do have fun and you will too.  Elmer
