CARLOS GUITARLOS (guitar/vocals) AND GIL T (bass/vocals), former members of the hard living, hard playing, wild and rockin' L.A. punk rock blues band Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs are joined by Evan Caleb Yearsley (drums) son of the incomparable blues diva Candye Kane. . .....

Liner notes from Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs' album, "Pigus Drunkus Maximus", written by Chris Morris:

"....For almost two years, the Rhythm Pigs took up a regular Monday night residency at the Cathay de Grande, Michael Brennan's fabled now defunt rock n' roll dungeon on the corner of Argyle and Selma in Hollywood. It was in those dank, poorly lit quarters that the Rhythm Pigs myth took shape. There, the city's most durable party people gathered to drink, dance and gape in awe as the essense of the blues threatened to knock down the ceiling panels.

At the center of this unlovely yet thrilling history is Top Jimmy himself. He presided over the revels as lead singer, bandleader and well-hammered host, laying down a raw singing style so authentically bluesy and lacking in honky hokum that one could believe the he was inhabited by the spirit of his chosen vocal avatar, the Howlin' Wolf himself.

Jimmy surrounded himself with kindred musical spirits to forge the toughest, scariest-looking band in L.A. The twin pillars of the Rhythm Pigs, axeman Carlos Guitarlos and bassist Gil T, are musicians who match their leader pound for pound and lick for lick.. Ably abetted by rhythm guitarist Dig the Pig, drummer Joey Morales, and saxman to the universe Steve Berlin, the Rhythm Pigs developed a live reputation that was as wild and unpredictable as the music they played...." -Chris Morris

Wikipedia describes the History of Top JImmy and the Rhythm Pigs: Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs had a residency playing "Blue Mondays" every Monday night at the Cathay de Grande nightclub at the corner of Argyle and Selma in Hollywood, California for three years, and was an important part of the Los Angeles rock scene. Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs concerts often featured guest appearances by such artists asTom Waits, David Lee Roth, Stevie Ray Vaughan, members of X, The Blasters, The Gun Club, The Circle Jerks, The Plugz, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and many more.[2] D.J. Bonebrake, who appeared on Pigus Drunkus Maximus, was a member of X. The band was saluted in the Van Halen song "Top Jimmy", and mentioned in "The Call of the Wreckin' Ball," on the The Knitters album, Poor Little Critter on the Road and the X album, Live at the Whisky a Go-Go.

Live, Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs usually consisted of Top Jimmy (James Paul Koncek): vocals, Carlos Guitarlos: guitar and vocals, Gil T.: bass and vocals, Dig The Pig: guitar, Joey Morales: drums and either Tom Fabre or Steve Berlin on saxophone. On their only record, Pigus Drunkus Maximus, released in 1987 (Down There Records, distributed by Restless), D.J. Bonebrake and Tony Morales contributed drum parts, while Gene Taylor added piano.

Jonny Whiteside says of Carlos:

"They don't call him Guitarlos for nothing--the cat wields his ax with flabbergasting skill, a mix of sophisticated technique and sheer musicality that allows him to employ a long-range artistic reach spanning a spectrum of impressive breadth, depth and height.

Technically, Guitarlos is unrivaled--he's capable of playing melody, an intricate bass line and beating out hot percussion all at once, creating a full-blown sound that positively dazzles. With a bottomless repertoire that demonstrates an intimate knowledge of almost every vernacular American music form, he also delivers it in a wildly idiosyncratic fashion that is as undeniably authentic as the hard-knock life he's led.

Famed for his early 80s stint with legendary blues-shockers Top Jimmy & the Rhythm Pigs, a Los Angeles club phenomenon whose tore-down sound easily matched punk rock's primitive kick (the band was immortalized in Van Halen's unabashed tribute "Top Jimmy & the Rhythm Pigs").

Carlos too became something of a legend--an impudent, unpredictable character as rowdy and volatile as one of his thunderous solos (and one of his most famous fuck ups was refusing to let David Lee Roth cover one of his songs). By the late 90′s, he hit bottom as an indigent street singer and nearly died from congestive heart failure, but the unstoppable drive of this raggedy genius prevailed; he eventually returned to form and kicked everyone in the pants with his outstanding 2003 album Straight from the Heart. Carlos' current CD, Hell Can Wait, is just as high-voltage, and when he hits the bandstand, watch out. --Jonny Whiteside"
