You know what they say about good things coming in small packages. This tiny, 18 month old chihuahua is maybe a whopping five pounds soaking wet, but she's packed with love and fun. She's full of energy, so curious and ready for anything. She's happy to be carried around and would make a perfect purse puppy. Just make sure it's an appropriate purse... I admit I have one for my 9 pound chihuahua who loves to go shopping with me, tucked discreetly away. Chiquita never gets enough of the people around her and loves to be the center of attention. She's still a little leary about other dogs, but she's learning to get along. Give her a treat and she'll do just about anything. She's just had a litter of pups but will be ready for spay next week.

The adoption fee for Chiquita is $185, plus spay deposit, cash or check only, please. The adoption fee is charged to help recover standard average veterinary expenditures for each dog. She sure is cute, but what in the world could the "standard" vet bills be to cost this much for an adoption fee? And that doesn't even seem to include the spay fee. Do they get many adoptions at these prices? Seems like these prices would encourage more back yard breeder sales. Low cost spay nueter should be around $50, and a standard exam plus shots sure wouldn't be $185. Maybe you could share how those charges are arrived at.

Leslie, Since I'm not actually with the shelter, I don't know exactly where all the fee goes, but I do know the spay fee is included in the adoption cost, as well as shots, exam and microchip (so maybe $100 of the fee?). I think the rest of the fee goes towards operating the shelter, as well as paying for the bigger vet fees incurred on some dogs who come in with injuries requiring surgery and such. I paid $185 for my chihuahua there two years ago. I had been looking at breeders, where even poorly bred chihuahuas started at $500 (well bred dogs as much as $1,500) so it seemed a bargain to me, while I rescued a dog at the same time. The shelter manages to adopt out almost every single dog they take in, so I guess others feel as I do. I have seen dogs that aren't as adoptable priced at $95. That said, we adopted two of our other dogs from shelters in another state where the fee was $70/dog.

Chiquita is so adorable and I love her name. My little chihuahua was sitting beside me and I was calling her Chiquita and she was running around barking at me. She weighs 6 lbs and is 2 yrs now. I love my rescue dogs and hope Chiquita is adopted really soon. Bless her heart.

Good morning Gretchen. Chiquita is adorable and worth moe than her adoption fees. I hope she finds her forever home soon, today. Leslie, it is expensive to provide for all the animals in shelters and rescues. Vet bills are up and donations are down. She's a bargain.
