If I Opened My Mouth and No Sound Came Out Did I Speak?

While I am flattered to be MeMe'd again, this time by the non-French speaking Michelle Casey, it is true that my first MeMe is not in the alphabetical list, which is likely why I'm being tapped a second time.

In early December, I wrote a MeMe, which is floating around somewhere, so I probably have very little to add to that.

Real Estate and Computers in 1988

Let's see, I bought my first computer in 1988, a 40-lb portable to replace the free computer I had been given several years earlier. I think it was an IBM XT, and it used 5 1/4-inch floppy disks. Not only do I have those disks, but also the 3 1/2 disks, none of which I can use anymore. I bought voice mail technology compatible with DOS and started a company called Pet Crisis Hotline, which I ran in my spare time. We sold pet tags with an engraved 800 number that disclosed owner information and authorized immediate medical treatment if a lost pet was found injured. I used to read my MS DOS book at bedtime. I had been selling real estate full time for more than ten years in 1988, ran my pet business, and started to write online -- Freenet was the only way I could access the internet, and there were no graphics. I'm dumbfounded at how much information can be stored on a thumb drive nowadays.

Title Searching in Colorado in 1975

I once worked for First American Title as a title searcher in Boulder, and I lived 17 miles up the canyon in a small town called Nederland. We had two bars in town, the Pioneer Inn and the Branding Iron, One of the bartenders had "restroom" tattooed on his arm so he didn't have to talk to customers who asked him where the restrooms were located. He could just raise his arm and point. My first residence in town was an A-frame where 17 guys lived. I was the only person who got up early in the morning to go to work, and everybody else used to stay up all night. They would often keep me awake with their noise, playing music, rolling logs into the fire, tossing empty beer cans into the kitchen sink -- rattles, bangs and thuds. So one winter morning when I left for work, I propped open all the windows, all the doors, and cranked the stereo up full blast as I headed out the door. There were much quieter at night after that.

red-footed boobie Birding since 1995

<--------------This is a red-footed boobie.

Both my husband and I go birding. We didn't plan to become birders, it happened quite by accident. One day we paused to wonder, "Hey, what kind of bird is that?" So, we bought a bird book, then binoculars and before long we were hooked. The first time we spotted a killdeer, I nearly hyperventilated with excitement. If birds were stoners, killdeers would be excellent candidates.  If you don't look at birds, you might think they are all brown or black, but the truth is there are a huge variety of birds of many colors, shapes and sizes in your back yard that you have probably never noticed.

Pet Lover

We have three cats. Two are ocicats that came from a breeder in Orange County. One is a chocolate silver male who can't be shown because he doesn't have any spots; he is marbled. The other is a retired breeder who is a cinnamon spotted and came to live with us when she was 18 months. Both were sort of considered throwaways because they aren't show quality anymore. Our other cat is a Somali, and he's almost 16. He lives in a 4x4 pen and comes out at night to sit with us. He was diagnosed with kidney disease a little over a year ago, but his last doctor visit showed no signs of disease anymore. Our doctor thinks the cat is neurotic now and not physically ill at all. All three think they run the house and scream at us nonstop.pai and pica

Adventure Travel

When I'm not swamped with work, I try to arrange time to travel. I love to travel but I don't care much for tourist attractions. I guess you could say I look for adventure. I once hiked through Provence, starting in Riez and walking nine miles over the mountains to Moustiers St. Marie, a small village that is famous for pottery nestled on the side of a rock canyon. That was only one day - we spent 10 days hiking on old Roman trails.

venice I've also hiked through the Ring of Kerry in Ireland. Traveling on foot is a great way to see the countryside and small towns. Couple years ago we went to the Galapagos and toured via a 16-passenger boat most of the islands, which is the best way to see the area. Then we slept in a thatched hut in the jungles of Ecuador for three days on our way back home. You have no idea how loud a jungle can be until you are sleeping in the middle of it. The screeches, howls, croaking -- it's unbelievable. Those 17 guys in Nederland paled in comparison to the sounds wild animals in the jungle can make at night.

So, now I will tap three others for a MeMe, whether it's a second round for them or not.

Enjoyed reading your meme.  I agree with your comment about how loud jungles and forests can be...there is so much going on in them and the sounds seem much louder at night.  I also used to enjoy bird watching, but have not done it in a long time.

Being a "Birder' and having Cats...isn't that a conflict of interest?...And aren't ALL cats neurotic to some extent?  :)

Hi Rich: Birding and having cats aren't a conflict. Having cats AND parakeets AND cockatiels, maybe, but I also have those birds, heh, heh. And fish. I'd have a dog, too, but I'm not home enough.

A little birdie sent me over this way to Cat-ch your Meme Elizabeth...

I love killdeers and my favorite bird here in TX (never saw it in Florida where I'm from originally) is a Scissortail Fly Catcher. The first time I saw this bird I thought it was radio controlled, they fly up and down in a vertical pattern at times and one was right in front of me at a soccer field. I thought one of the kids had a remote control toy bird! You can tell I am NOT a birder... but I love nature.

I will get to that 2nd meme soon...gracias for thinking of me...and other things too!

Elizabeth, I think you could write more MeMe's and divulge even more about yourself. This one went in an entirely different direction, but very, very interesting.

On an additional note, I was one of those DOS book readers. Everytime a new version came out or a new version of whatever regarding computers, I was all over it. Not these days though. More gadgets, programs, and stuff I'll never get around to learning. New stuff pops up every day! AND I still have my floppies too. How funny is that? My current computer and everyone I have built always has a 3" floppy drive. Don't know why since I've never used it; however, just in case??? In case what? Who knows? Most of it is law stuff and I don't do that anymore and haven't for ten years. Duh!!

Karen: You should start looking at bird pictures. I swear. You might get hooked. I often pick out birds that seem cool to find; study them, their markings, habitat and put them on my wish list. For example, cedar waxwings are really cool and unusual. Then, a few months ago while out walking, I came upon a tree that was loaded with cedar waxwings! Not only did I recognize them, but it was the first time I had spotted them in the wild, which is a thrill beyond words.

Teri: No, no, no, no more MeMes, I have no time to write them. Just like you, I have no time to read all those new manuals, either. At least DOS was stable. It wasn't changing every two minutes.

Jesse & Kathy: Do. not. tap. me.

Sara: Funny you should mention the tattoo thing. The guy's name was Carl, and just this morning a friend forwarded me a link to the Rocky Mountain News that ran a feature Friday on Nederland and Caribou Ranch. They mentioned the same guy. But they didn't mention Otis. Otis had a steel plate in his head. If he made sense to you, you were blasted. That was the test. LOL.

Kevin: I am a pretty organized person, believe it or not. For travel, I try to pick a down time, which is either around Christmas or in July. And I go away for 2 to 3 weeks every two years. The rest of the time, I do Thursday thru Monday fast trips, like to Hawaii or Cabo. But I'm also a workaholic, so I probably do the work of two or three people at any given time.

Elizabeth, I really enjoyed reading both of your meme's!

I love bird watching as well.  I have loads of American Goldfinches that visit my feeders.  They are so cute and fun to watch.  I have spotted 1 Indigo Bunting- he was beautiful.

Have  you been the the Cinque Terre in Italy?  It's a great place for adventure travel.

Cinque Terre? I hear that REI has a trip there for about $3,000, not including airfare, for six days. Seems that when we did the REI trips to France and Ireland, it was about half that price and a longer trip. Guess the falling U. S. dollar is reflected in those prices.

BTW, I really enjoyed the picture of the red-footed boobie. I happen to be a boobie lover myself!  What a small world!

Take care,

I enjoyed reading your meme  Elizabeth, you have an interesting travel book going. Love the cat pics, what marvelous colorations. Killdeer are very common here, I love to hear their call, and they are great actors - they fake having a wounded wing if you get close to their nest, which is on the ground in a meadow or plowed field.

Lucky, You are such a treat and breath of fresh air. I love your sense of humor.

Bonnie: I did not know that killdeer can fake an injury. Don't these birds look stoned to you? :) One of my exciting discoveries recently was viewing a cedar waxwing. My husband and I were walking to the Land Park Tower Theatre, and I spotted a tree filled with them. I suppose they are common throughout the country, but that was the first and only time I have caught these birds up close. I read the bird books, look at the photos and say to myself, "I want to see this bird someday." And then that day comes. Funny how it works out that way.
