Mold is NOT Toxic! So Says The CDC!

mold removealI recently had the opportunity to work with a buyer that did mold inspection for commercial buildings all over the country.  He made a statement that I thought was interesting.  He said that old data on mold and how toxic it was has been proven to be overstated and in some cases completely unfounded.

Well, I guess it makes all those guys in funny white suits cleaning mold feel awfully silly!  But really, is this right?  Well I took a look at the CDC site just to see what their latest take on mold actually is.  And this is what I found,

"The term "toxic mold" is not accurate. While certain molds are toxigenic, meaning they can produce toxins (specifically mycotoxins), the molds themselves are not toxic, or poisonous. Hazards presented by molds that may produce mycotoxins should be considered the same as other common molds which can grow in your house. There is always a little mold everywhere - in the air and on many surfaces. There are very few reports that toxigenic molds found inside homes can cause unique or rare health conditions such as pulmonary hemorrhage or memory loss. These case reports are rare, and a causal link between the presence of the toxigenic mold and these conditions has not been proven."

Turns out that mold itself is not Toxic... who knew!  So maybe he was right.  At any rate.  The CDC has a lot of good information on mold.  Just thought I would share the link so you can get the truth about mold.

Just got done showing houses to a CDC client and they had the opposite opinion. In Nueces county the MOLD capital of the US, or at least in claims, most houses seemed to have some form of it. Some buyers didn't care to see any remediated houses and some didn't care. It also seemed some types of mold affected certain people a lot differently. Good luck either way!

Jeremy, in the CDC article it actually states that most places has some type of mold.  I guess the reality is that it's still another "unknown".  But I really think people have been made to fear mold like it was cryptonite to Superman. I have to say, I cringe when I see it and get out of there as soon as I can.
