God Has a Big Tent!

This term “big tent” often comes up in conversation when we are talking about political parties. This party, or that party has a big tent…or it doesn’t have a big tent; which is meant to mean that a particular party is inclusive in its organizational structure, or that the party is not welcoming to particular groups. Depending on your political leanings, the other side’s “tent” appeals to all groups; or maybe various groups go unrepresented.

What got me to thinking about God having a big tent; was when I was reading about the ACLU group bringing litigation upon communities to remove any form of public display of a particular religious affiliation. This could be in the form of a Nativity scene on the town square, or a cross removed from a city’s governmental shield. Cash strapped communities were just complying to the threat of a lawsuit, rather than spend countless thousands of taxpayer dollars trying to defend themselves.

At first, I got really angry. I was thinking, “Why do people want to take God out of our lives?” However, the longer I thought about it, the more I came to realize their actions had no impact on my faith. I was free to believe or not to believe…regardless of anyone else. It’s a choice we all make, to be faithful to God, or to be faithless. No one can remove God from our hearts, but us.

We are coming up to the second most important Christian holiday. For those of us who are Christian, we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. My oldest son, Steven, recently married a Jewish woman, and he converted to Judaism. His conversion has caused me to expand my vision of faith. Note, I said MY vision of faith…not God’s. The fact that Christmas is important to me; does not mean that it has to be important to you. And just as important, whatever faith you are and whatever holidays you celebrate; does not need to impact me.

As Americans, reading the above we might tend to think this has something to do with our religious freedom-but it goes way beyond that. Our faith is a gift from God. Since the beginning of time, no man or country has had the ability to grant us faith. It comes directly from our creator. We are free to accept it, or refuse it. This gift is available to everyone who has ever drawn a breath, no matter where they reside.

So, if we believe that someone created us…then He created EVERYONE…NOT JUST ME. As His creation, He offered salvation to EVERYONE…NOT JUST ME. And this is where the big tent comes into play. If God created EVERYONE; and EVERYONE has an equal opportunity for salvation…then we all are invited to come into His tent, provided we come to Him with a clean spirit.

Now comes the tricky part, who determines who has a clean spirit? Throughout time, we have had plenty of mortals step forward to speak in behalf of God, and say who can’t enter God’s tent. Normally, when that happens; the results haven’t been good.

Logically, if God created the world, and he created us…isn’t it His call who enters His tent…or kingdom? There is no need for us humans to be concerned about how anyone else worships God. On judgment day, each of us will be on our own. There won’t be a jury of our peers to judge us…it will be just God. And if we are lucky enough to make it into heaven, we won’t be asked to sit in judgment of others.

So, my beautiful Nativity scene is up in my home, and there won’t be anyone knocking on my door telling me to take it down. Conversely, I won’t be knocking on anyone’s door asking them to put one up! I intend to have a wonderful Christmas. How you choose to worship God is strictly between you and God. In summation, I guess it is not important how we find our way to God, it’s that we seek Him out in the first place.

Thomas, I've also have been thinking about such things lately. The news this morning had a West Point Cadet dropping out because he felt uncomfortable with the Christian attitude there and I'm sure there will be a suit, they were smoking pot in public in Washington state, a couple of women were getting married in NY and another nativity scene was saved by creative thinking Christians who found a loophole by making them live nativity scenes... Seek first the Kingdom of God and all His righteousness. What really got me thinking just about what you so eloquently wrote here, was finding out that Billy Graham has been a registered Democrat his entire life. Maybe they aren't all bad... you know? God loves them, so should I and all the others who make the news daily trying to push God out of our public lives. Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do. Bless you.

Bob,

Thanks for commenting, I always appreciate your viewpoint because it is easy to see that you have spent some time reflecting on what I wrote. Talking about one's faith is a very personal experience for most people, and it is a fine line sharing your faith and preaching to someone. Luckily, my comments aren't really read by very many, so I don't get the wrath of the masses. As I have said before, my blog is a way of formally praying to God...so He is the only "reader" important to me...if others enjoy something, then that is just icing on the cake.

As I have gotten older, I spend less and less time worrying about what others say and do. I can not control them, they will have to answer to God...but they don't have to answer to me. The vast majority of us are just trying to live our lives from day to day. We allow our leaders and our media to polarize us into various groups...political parties, different faiths, different races, different classes of society and status...but the common, everyday person is just trying to provide for the people they love...no matter where they are standing on this Earth.  Let's leave the judging to God.

Again, thanks so much for your thoughts! You make my blog a better place by having stopped by!

Thomas, the feeling is mutual. I've done a bit of research into judging in the past and my Biblical understanding is this: We are to judge, we will also judge angels one day but the line is drawn at those we have authority over to judge. Men are to judge their wives and children and grandchildren. That is were discipline comes into rearing children... it is what a good father does. It is the corrective hand that loves. Not to be confused with punishment... and where our wives are concerned we are to love them while judging them... usually they don't require much since they came from the rib of Adam and are an upgrade to us "dirt based" men.

Also, an employer should be judging his workers as well and that is why they have the power to hire and fire as all authority comes from God. As is always the case, there are good judges and there are bad judges. Here's to being good judges. I have a feeling you are a very good one.

Bob,

The judgment I am speaking of is when someone takes God's place and speaks as if they are speaking for God. As an example, my wife belonged to a Bible study group being run by a woman from a very fundamentalist Christian church in our area. The group consisted of this lady, about 5-6 Catholic woman, and one woman from India, who was  Hindu. The Catholic women repeatedly ignored the comments about none of them being "saved", because they were not "born-again". What finally broke the group apart was when they all agreed to pray for one another, and this group leader said she would also would pray over the person the Hindu lady was given to pray over...because God would not answer her prayers since she was Hindu.

The leader was a very lovely lady...but I just consider it to be extremely dangerous to speak in behalf of God as to who is worthy of HIs love, or whose prayers God will answer, or not answer. I think we sometimes narrow down the meaning of the Commandment, Do not take the Lord's name in vain...as simply meaning not to swear. I like to expand the meaning to its most broadest meaning...don't for a minute presume to be God. He created us, He created our world...it's His ball, it is His game...He makes the rules, we just are supposed to follow them. In terms of who goes to Heaven,or who goes to Hell, that is His, and only His call to make.

I wish you lived closer, I think you would be a fun family to know.
