Grass on White. How to Photograph Silhouettes.

fairfax and loudoun county realtors, how to photograph silhouettes

Shots like this are very easy to make. Whether you want to make a silhouette outside of a person or a small one inside like this, the idea is similar. Have the light behind the object and use no flash. Outside you will have to experiment more but inside you can control all factors.

fairfax and loudoun county realtors  For this shot I used the same little grass plant I used the other night for Grass On Black, BUT instead of a black cloth back drop I hung a piece of white felt in a bright window and put the grass plant in front and shot away with no flash.

I like the minimalist style and the feathery look of the plant that resulted.

By the way none of the shots that I post are straight out of the camera. I use Adobe Lightroom and the free app. Picasa to make adjustments.

If you are not doing any post processing of your photos, give it a try. It is easy to learn and there are a million tutorials on YOUTUBE.

fairfax and loudoun county realtorsYou can really improve the look of your work without buying more expensive equipment, if you wil learn to process.

Even the so called film purists of old were masters of chemical manipulation in the dark room to achieve the look they wanted.

Ansel Adams the great black and white photographer of western landscapes said that "you do not TAKE a photograph...you Make a photograph."

If you wonder why the photos that come from your camera do not look like many of the published shots, one BIG factor is that the professionals are processing geniuses as well as great shooters. It's all part of making art no?

Don't be afraid to experiment outside your comfort zone. There is no film cost... the electrons are free
.

Hi Steve,

I have never heard of Adobe Lighthouse. I use Ribbet and iPccy. Is Lighthouse free or is it just a trial offer for a limited time? Great photo!

Your last sentence has said it all, "Electrons are free."  That fact has liberated many a photographer to take as many shots as necessary in a quest for those that are more perfect!  Great tips, Steve!

Hi Steve, I purchased a Plug-in ( Topaz Fusion HDR ) for Aperture and Lightroon and experimented for about a half hour today in Lightroom 3. I used a photo of a pair of B-52's that I photographed last year at the Naval Aviation Centennial Air Parade. ( About 250 plans from the bi-plane to todays most sphisticated jets). I used the photo because it had not been previously adjusted and the 2 planes were on the dark side with a full bright blue sky. Usually I would enhance detail and light. In the HDR adjustment there were many more details and textures even including exhaust smoke that was barely visable in the original unprocessed photo. You will love the plug-ins for Lightroom. Go to www.topazlabs.com/fusion/ and you will find they are very affordable.

Steve, That is a great post!  I love using Picasa, I have recently downloaded Gimp for free, it is a much more complex photo editing software, but it too is free.  I am looking forward to learning how to make art with my photos!  Have a great day!

Kristin, Lightroom is about 100 bucks depending where you get it.

Myrl, Indeed. It is a pleasure to shoot now when you do not have to guard every shot and wait for processing to see it no?

Hmm I have been learning to photograph silhouettes for a long time now. I referred to online essay writing servicefor this but did not help much. I am indeed happy that this tutorial turned out to be helpful!
