Will Santa Burn his Boots?

During Atlanta home inspections, I visually inspect the fireplace and chimney to ensure that it is in working order. A properly functioning damper will close when not in use to prevent birds and other animals as well as the natural elements from entering your home.

It is important to note that there are a variety of dampers available on the market today. Depending upon the age of your home’s chimney, there may not be a damper. Older homes built with masonry fireplaces tend not to have dampers at all. There are options for fixing this issue if it is present at your home. A homeowner can control the smoke which enters the chimney with a center pull damper. This damper can be closed when not in use to block the flue. Remember to adjust the opening when the fireplace is in use. If you do not open the damper, your home will fill with smoke, damage can also occur to the fireplace mantel or tile.

If you have a brand new home, most likely the damper was installed during construction. Built from cast iron or brass, the built-in can be adjusted by turning a lever. Some levers are simple on and off and some have more settings. The fire can be controlled by you and the adjustments you make with the lever. Temperature and flame brightness can be controlled this way, too.

It has also been found at Atlanta home inspections that some homes have an upper and a lower damper. The upper damper will control air flow as well as sustain chimney life when used properly. The lower damper functions as mentioned above. It allows you to control the flames and heat.

Many people opt for a gas fireplace. With this option, as long as the damper is open, the fireplace can be safe to use. The important thing to remember, is closing the damper will also close the air flow from outside, which actually is better for energy consumption. When the damper is left open, air draws directly through the chimney and into your home. So in order to keep Santa from burning his boots or getting stuck in the chimney, remember to open and close the damper properly.

Christmas is a great time to remind home owners about chimney maintenance and proper use. For many, lighting fires in them during the holidays will be the first use since last year.
