Going away for the Holidays? Ask USPS to hold your mail!

If you are one of the hundreds of thousands of folks who will be leaving home for a period of time during the holiday season, you might want to take a minute to schedule a vacation hold for your mail.

I didn't know this process was so easy until our faithful neighbors moved away. We would always collect their mail for them and they would reciprocate. But now that they're gone (sniff), I had to figure out the 21st Century way to keep mail from piling up in my streetside mailbox.

Here's how to do it ... and it's super easy!

1) Go to the USPS Hold Mail Service website.

2) Fill out the availability form and click CHECK AVAILABILITY:

3) If USPS Hold Mail Service is available to you, fill out the START and STOP dates. You can even specify if you would like your letter carrier to deliver the held mail to you when you return from vacation, or if you would like to pick it up at the post office.

And that's it! Easy peasy. Now that you have that taken care of, have a great holiday vacation and rest easy that your mail will be safe (and dry!) at your local post office while you are away.

I've done this for years by calling my local post office and they always deliever the day we arrive home.  On line is easy too.

Ki - many, many years ago you had to go to the post office and fill out a paper form. Then when you returned from your vacation, you had to go back to collect your mail. I had no idea it was this easy!

Tammy - I don't even know if my post office has a phone. I've never heard one ring while I was standing in line to mail a package. Online is SUPER easy, so convenient!

Hello Cynthia -- anything that gives the appearance that life is going on as usual when we are not home is very useful to keep the potential bad guys away and asking the US Postal Service to keep mail is another item on the vacation checklist.

Exactly, Michael. And it's a good idea to ask neighbors to keep a watch as well. I'm super lucky in the neighbor department.
