The mayor is about to announce that up to nine DC government employees have been terminated after they were found to have visited an egregious amount of pornographic sites during 2007.

An investigation was conducted by the Office of the Chief Technology Officer. The investigation began September 15th of last year after the city got a complaint from an employee about co-workers browsing and downloading pornographic content on government computers.

My only question is what exactly is an egregious amount. This is another area that needs to have zero tolerance. I am glad the Mayor has stepped up to the plate, but I prefer a home run rather than a single.

It would seem the necessary action has been taken, but what about tomorrow or the next day or the day after that? I know that there are ways that url's can be blocked by any server. I don't know how they do it, but I know they can.

In my office, I am blocked from myspace, youbet.com and other sites. Someone has put that company firewall in place.

I think that Mayor Fenty should take the money saved by firing those rascals and pay someone, preferably one of the little guy contractors to come in and explain how to put up the url block on all government computers.

Now, if they had a computer at home...they could use gotomypc.com and do what they want on that machine. Perverts are cheap, they probably use the money on mags or illegal dvd's. I can't imagine anyone with any sense fulfilling the title of "wanker" while on the job on the companies computer. Of course, I don't understand the sick puppies that visit public libraries to get their jollys online while sitting in a room of high school kids doing homework.

Hmmmm....I don't really understand much about them. They have no regard for public standards of decency. They support industries that are notorius for their abuse of women. They include folks that can not quite understand the difference between child and adult.

You know what....Mayor Fenty, this may be bigger than busting the thieving bastards at the tax office. I am liking your style!

I love this guy.

He also fired the Social Workers who ignored the reports and made useless visits to the home of the woman who killed her 4 children.

Can you imagine that????   Actually firing a Social Worker who enabled matricide??

I suspect that the DC government will be tied up for years by law suits by the DC workers union.

Lenn - As you and I know, he has struck at the nerve center of the beauracracy. I am both delighted at his focus and terrified at the prospect that he may suffer from his actions. There are millions of dollars at stake and he is standing up to the slackards and ferreting out those that have had the free ride.

I sold a home to one of the directors of a department for Mayor Williams.   I learned a lot.  I admired Mayor Williams for his attempts to clean up the financial quagmire that was DC.  He really did a lot and always with one hand tied behind his back with the inability to rid the government of cronyism, nepotism and selling offices, selling contracts and worse.

The city now has a Mayor who will take on the establishment and clean out the dead wood.  Another move in the right direction.

Sean - It is unrealistic to expect those that serve us to be free from any sin. Take the time to read my earlier post http://activerain.com/blogsview/323707/Marion-Barry-Thank-You regarding Marion Barry.

At some point, you have to weigh all facets of those that have led us. No former official, save maybe Jimmy Carter has an empty closet. I could choose to remember the duplicity of FDR regarding his physical ailments and peccadillo's and I would fail to remember the "New Deal". I could choose to remember the dalliances of the Kennedy brothers and I would set aside the memory of "Camelot" and the vision of a better tomorrow. I could choose to remember the darker side of Martin Luther King, Jr. and I would fail to enjoy the fire of his dream and his place in history. I could choose to focus on a stained blue dress and I would fail to remember the prosperity we enjoyed under Clinton. I could choose to remember Bush continuing to read to children while we were under attack and I would overlook all the factors that removed most chances he had to lead this country in the direction he hoped.

I could choose all those options, but I prefer to remember the good that men do, the evil will be interred with their bones.

Lenn- Those of us that have lived through the struggle for DC to have competent home rule are delighted to see a leader on the scene that may be able to pull all the pieces together.

Elaine - Change takes time. I am reminded of the vast difference between a speed boat and an ocean liner. Bureaucracy's are much like the ocean liner. Changing course is more difficult and takes more effort. The speed boats are like the voice of those asking for change. They are quick to appear and can change direction on a moments notice.

DC now has a strong "Captain" at the helm and I believe he is changing course and setting his sights on the port of Pride and Competent Home Rule.

John-Mayor Fenty has an uphill battle but he does seem to be making a stab at cleaning up the government and school system.  He isn't going to be able to get it all done overnight.  I applauded the firing of the social workers who ignored the calls about the four children and this latest action shows he is serious.  Now about that 100,000 seat domed stadium at the site of RFK stadium?

Nice blog John. It made me smile and that is always a good thing. Obviously I don't know much about your local politics, but you seem to have a guy at the helm who appears to be trying.

Cindy - The stadium proposal does not include any money from the District Government. The offer is to lease the land. Nothing else can be built on the property. Razing RFK stadium and building a new one on the same site would require very little in the way of environmental impact statements. If the parking lot is to be used for anything else, including building a statement, there will be many costs involved.

If they just leave RFK stadium as it is, it will become a broken down relic. You may remember that when Jerry Wolman did the initial construction, there was a great deal of concern regarding his pouring concrete in sub-freezing temperatures. Today, the stadium is in poor condition and areas are often blocked off because of falling chunks of the upper deck.

If the "white elephant" in Largo must be abandoned, so be it. The RFK site provides Metro access. The new stadium would be domed so that it would get into the Super Bowl rotation. Should a Super Bowl come to the city, the financial impact of the plan would be very positive.

Not to disagree with anything you said, John - I agree totally - but in all the many discussions about this situation, I have yet to hear anyone say anything about the fact these employees are on the taxpayer dole and clearly NOT WORKING.  They were not just looking at porno, they were looking at an UNEBELIEVABLE amount of porno, which means they essentially had time for nothing else.  The situation is totally out of control on so many levels.

Fenty is definitely on the right track and it is a delight to watch him "go for it!"  I wish him all the best.

John, Accountability -- a given in every walk and talk in America, save Government. I so enjoyed this post because in New Jersey many folks are suffocating under the weight of bureaucracy. Excellent post. I do enjoy your blogs that tackle these issues.

John, I'm learning so much about the inner workings of Washington D.C. from you.  It's great.  I never understood the Barry thing until I read your blog.  It sounds like D.C. is on the RIGHT TRACK...now may we have the courage to put the country on the right track!
