Upper West Side, Manhattan

The first night of Hanukkah begins tonight Saturday December 8.

During the eight nights and days of Hanukkah, we commemorate the ancient re-dedication of the menorah, lit once again in the Holy Temple of Jerusalem. The word Hanukkah (חֲנֻכָּה) translates as dedication or inauguration.

We mark this great miracle with the introduction of light – both physical and spiritual – into the darkest time of the year, watching as that light grows brighter and brighter each and every night.

HAPPY CHANUKAH!

Lenn, I took a close up shot this morning. It is pretty big. The sun wasn't out yet. I just got home and now the trees behind it are lit up with Christmas lights. I should take another photo.

Happy Hanuka Hilary. NY is always special.  My sister lives in Scarsdale.

Jill Happy Chanuka! Enjoy! I was in the office printing flyers for tomorrow's open houses and picked up delicious latkes and apple sauce from Zabars next door.

Good evening Mitchell. Happy Chanukah to you too. The derivation of the holiday is what you indicated but reflects the time when the greeks destryed the Temple and took all but a days worth of oil and extinguished the eternal light. Getting more oil would take 8 days and the miracle was that the little oil left burned eight days. And now for more Jewish stories, turn in tomorrow.

Hi Mitchel, have a happy Chanukah-the menorah is gorgeous and I look forward to seeing it tomorrow when I come into the city.  And btw, both you and Sheila Anderson are both right.  Chanukah has historical as well as spiritual significance.

Mitchell, we wish you a Happy Chanukah and a very Happy New Year! Mitchell, I especially appreciate you posting the year in the Jewish Calendar. Our Judeo-Christian culture is older than 2000 years and sometimes we forget that.

Alexandra, Thank you. You're too much of a foodie not to actually stop and stay a while in NYC.

Sheila, Thank you, Happy Chanukah. Thanks for the Hebrew history lesson,-) I was going for a new modern spiritual angle this year. I look forward to more Jewish stories tomorrow.

Joan, Thank you. I have to watch the food. It's so greasy and fattening all that celebrating of oil.

Lorrie, Happy Chanukah. Love sour cream too.The Latkes are so bad fried oil colosterol ,-) I thought the apple sauce was healthier.

Jeff, Thanks it is a beautiful menorah.

Pat, Thank you. Yes, You need to get here soon. I haven't seen you since 2 hurricanes ago,-)

Joanna, Happy Chanukah! Thank you. I was going for the spiritual significance of light this year. So many New Yorkers lost power and light due to hurricane Sandy. In addition to the usual latkes, songs, dreidels, candles and gelt Chanukah brings more light into this darkest time of the year.

The world's largest menorah is at Grand Army Plaza in Manhattan, Fifth Avenue at 59th street near Central Park. Enjoy!

Hey Mr. Hall...and I'm Hillary with 2 l's too, just with an "i," right?  Small world and hope that your sister weathered Superstorm Sandy well.  We are gearing up for a lot of mold work because not everyone got dried out thoroughly and some had trees take out pipes.  We are family owned and my guys are background checked for hers and your peace of mind. I hope to meet you at our next NY City ActiveRain gathering...at the Oyster Bar again, we hope!  Cheers!

Hi Hillary, I should be more sensitive to two l's. Sorry. I get Mitchel a lot. My sister lives in a coop apartment on Garth Road. Luckily she didn't have any damage even though her terrace overlooks the Bronx river with a lot of trees in between. Hope to meet you too at our next AR gathering.
