Each year Story Book Island on Sheridan Lake Rd in southwest Rapid City goes all out in holiday lighting.  It is a magnificent sight.  It is a jaw-dropping adventure for the kids (and grandparents, too!).

Each year the State capitol hallways are filled with a grand Christmas at the Capitol display.  The trees are decorated by schools, churches, civic groups and others.  You can view a great video of the South Dakota State Capitol's Christmas Tree Display.  The theme this year is Joyous Sounds of Christmas.  The display is open to the public through December 26.  Call ahead.

You can grab the grandkids and an ax to go chop down your own Christmas tree in the Black Hills National Forest.  But be sure to get the official permit first, if for no other reason than to confirm it is currently allowed.  You can also have the permit cover collection of branches for wreaths.
