About 40 miles north of my place in Renton is the small town of Snohomish. It’s one of the oldest inland communities in our area of the Pacific Northwest, founded in 1859.
Emory C. Ferguson (1833-1911) was a pioneer and founder of the City of Snohomish. He originally came here to find gold but made his fame and fortune selling goods to prospectors and later farmers. He also served as postmaster, mayor, was active in real estate, ran a saloon, was a justice of the peace and later a legislator when Snohomish became a County in 1861.
When I walked into the Java Haus Cafe in oldtown Snohomish for the first time I was delighted to find the entrepreneurial spirit was well and alive here too. The first thing that really grabbed my attention was this picture of these two old guys enjoying a Cup of Joe and a hearty laugh. It brought me a big smile.
This quaint little barn like structure is just off the parking lot at McDaniel's Do It Center hardware store. My surprise was discovering it's owned by Chef James White the past 13 years. He’s been a chef at the Seattle Sheraton Hotel and Towers, The Brown Palace Hotel in Denver Colorado and Executive Chef at the Grand Aleutian Hotel in Alaska.
The Java Haus is a casual cafe and serves breakfast and lunch sandwiches, soups, salads, and of course coffee and tea etc. There were plenty of locals coming and going while we were there. Chef James uses the Java Haus as HQ for his catering business. It always makes me feel good when I discover the local entrepreneurial spirit is well and alive!
This area is home turf for my friend and coworker Kristine Jameson. I sure enjoy my local experts who introduce me to these great neighborhood places. Kristine is batting 1000! I now have several places to write about up here in the Northend. I’m looking forward to next week. We'll be back in Snohomish to teach a social media class and I hear the Haus Ham & Cheddar melt on French is really good!
