Fishhawk Lake Eagle Sighting!

I was home waiting for a service person from Columbia NW Heating and right after she arrived, we happened to look out the window to see a bald eagle flying low right in front of my home on Fishhawk Lake! He was aiming for some non-descript object in Fishhawk Lake. I didn’t have time to grab the camera, but she and I had a wonderful time watching him. He didn’t get it and flew off.

This happened twice more, as he was quite persistent. The third time I was able to grab my camera, put it on the “sports” setting for rapid shooting and ran out in the rain to get a few shots. I feel quite lucky that I captured what I could since I had not planned this and didn’t have a tripod. I just followed him from the trees to the water. (They're not NatGeo material, but hey--I'm happy to have gotten them at all!)

He still wasn’t able to retrieve whatever it was and as I was editing the photos, I looked up (not in time to grab the camera), and saw TWO bald eagles head off towards the other end of Fishhawk Lake (a rarity)!

Ginger, the service person, has just moved here from Chicago within the last month and has already seen elk during the service calls she does for  Columbia NW Heating. She can now put a bald eagle on her list. I will add that she is an excellent addition to their staff; efficient, knowledgeable and friendly-- they're a good company if you ever need this kind of service in Portland, Scappoose, and those of us in the outer fringes like Fishhawk Lake.

Gayle, what a thrill for you! and us too.  No such thing as down time for nature just because it is winter time.

Hi Gayle, You must have been so excited. I always get a kick out of myself when I see something special - my first thought is sharing it in the Rain. It seems that way with you as well.

Mona, boy don't you have THAT right--you've been there, too.

William~you nailed it! I was SO darned excited. Even getting the semi-okay photos--I was happy to be there in the moment. I couldn't wait to download them and create a post. This is like one of those before-Christmas-Christmas presents!

Hi Gayle, Having seen these and getting the pictures of them was great! What camera did you use? I am always looking around for that right camera that I can use for my realestate business and for taking pictures like you did as well...

Sarah and Les~

After much searching and getting opinions from fellow Rainers, (as well as my history with using Canon 35mm cameras), I chose the Canon Rebel T3i. I went to BestBuy and talked at length with their camera experts--actually went more than once. They had a package deal that I went for and haven't looked back. I got two lenses, and the one I shot with is a zoom 55-250macro. I would like to get a bigger zoom lens as I can tell that I need it for those nature shots that are just a wee bit farther across the lake than this particular zoom will handle.

I will tell you that this is a complicated camera. I bought the CD for training--excellent idea. It immediately told me a website to go where I could download the manual in BIGGER PRINT. Excellent customer service right off the bat~!

Good luck and if you need more info, please feel free to e-mail me.

Sharon, I absolutely love these strong majestic creatures. They truly stand for all of us as bastions of what we represent in this country and I am glad they are our mascots for America. I'm quite happy (and surprised) to have made your day--it sure made mine both with the photos and the feature (had no idea I'd get EITHER, frankly)!

Maybe he thought it was a dead fish floating on the surface and when he felt it knew that it was trash.  Great photos!

Karen Anne~the opportunities seem endless for showcasing Mother Nature at her finest.

Christine~like you, that was one of my favorite things of all of the pictures. When he put his claws down to retrieve the "something", I thought I'd get lucky and have it be a bit clearer--but the focus was on his wing--hey, he was movin' fast!

Jay, we looked at it with the binoculars and never did figure out what it could be. We never see dead fish lying on the surface and it wasn't that. It kept dipping down as he would go to hook it with his claws.

Sharon, sure love ya!

Christiansen team, that turned out to be my favorite, too. Thanks!

Charles, I didn't know that a bald eagle is a representative of the Christmas spirit...that's news to me! But Merry Christmas to you, too.

Randy, we have many species of waterfowl hanging out on the lake right now and I'm surprised that he didn't try to go after them instead out of sheer frustration.
