Who Wants To Celebrate With A Groundhog???

By
Title Insurance with Patriot Land Transfer, Inc.

Next Saturday, February 2, Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog, will stick his head out of his home to determine if he sees his shadow or not...I never did understand this tradition, but I think if he doesn't see his shadow that's a good thing. It signals that there are 6 more weeks until spring!

Anyhow, however you wish to interpret the groundhog weather forecaster's fate, the official pronouncement from the official website of the revered varmint from western/central Pennsylvania goes:

"Six more weeks of winter, or an early spring... which will it be? If Phil sees his shadow on Saturday, February 2nd, we can expect six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow signals an early spring."

 So there you have it!

Now, being the reasonable and always reasoning guy that I am, I reckon there would be six more weeks of winter before spring anyhow...no matter how you calculate it! So give or take a day or two. Who really cares?

I celebrate the arrival of spring when the temperature gets warmer, when there is an aroma of budding flowers in the air, when I can repose my winter clothing, when the days are noticeably longer, when I see more than crocuses flowering...or is it croci!

In any event, this year I want to celebrate with old Phil! I want to see more than one hundred thousand points at the bottom of my profile picture by February 2! That will make t his leap year of 2008 extra special.

I'm talking as a blogger now. That 100,000 points will signal the end of my 'basic training'...I will enter the 'Spring' of my blogging career...and I will be celebrating with a furry creature that I have tried on numerous occasions to eradicate from my little corner of the world!

Come February 2, 2008 I guess it won't get much better than this!!!

Phil, here's to ya!!!

Well Fran, since I live here in Florida, it really doesn't matter to me, whatever the outcome may be. It's always hot here, always one color (green) and I never understood why they call it the Sunshine State, cause it seems like it's always raining!

It's fun to watch the event on T.V. Just like every other year, I will be watching. Good luck to you with your goal. I'm sure you'll achieve it.

I grew up in Lancaster County, and they too have a groundhog celebration. I always thought it was just an excuse for a bunch of old men to get dressed up and drink! I still put hope in the forecast, though!

Dawn: And the gators would eat any groundhogs, I suppose!

Linda: It's still an excuse for a bunch of old men to get dressed up and drink, I think!

Thanks,   Fran

I never quite understood the Punxsutawney Phil thing, but I totally get a kick out of the rituals.

Fran, When I lived in PA, I always was anxious to see what Phil had to forecast.  Now that I am in Vegas, I know winter is almost over no matter what Phil says.

Cute post, Fran.

At the rate you're going, you'll be reaching 200,000 before the real spring is here....

Here in Ontario we have Wiarton Willy...the albino groundhog.

Roberta: We get some of our worst snowstorms in February and March as you well know...the good news is they usually don't stick around too long...for our Floridians, that means the snow melts quickly after each storm!!!

Jo: You actually have 'albino groundhogs'?...they're still varmints!!! :)

Thanks,   Fran

Does this mean on the 2nd you are going to actually pop your head out of your office, if your office staff sees your shadow that you are going to continue being a newbie for another six weeks?

congrats on the 100K Fran.

I hope we have an early spring.  P. Phil is the national groundhog but different regions have different weather, we rely on Buckeye Chuck in Central Ohio

Maureen,

Do you have any nice homes for sale in your area...I'm moving!!! LOL, Thanks,   Fran

P.S. On the other hand, can a Nittany lion trust a buckeye???

13181 properties for sale in all of Central Ohio... I am sure we can find something to suit, here where we are going to have an early spring.

I don't know about Nittany lions in Central Ohio... I am a Badger in Buckeye-land.  Did you know in Germany they used badgers rather than groundhogs... or so I have read.  I would imagine we will have some more snow storms despite Buckeye Chuck's prediction.   We could have snow after March 21 (I think that's the Spring Equinox anyway.)

Maureen,

We've had some of our worst and memorable snowstorms in mid March...fortunately, they go as quickly as they come because of the milder March temperatures! Think Spring!!! BTW, I hate moving! Thanks,   fran
