New Hampshire Healthiest State

NEW HAMPSHIRE IS THE SECOND HEALTHIEST STATE IN AMERICA

When the United Health Foundation's annual list came out for 2012, New Hampshire came in Number 2 in the Nation!  Next was Vermont ranked at #1 and Hawaii ranked at # 2.  Our Neighbor Massachusetts came in #4.

The World Health Organization defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

Factors such as personal behaviors, the environment and community, policies of the national and state government as well as the care we receive are important components of what defines a healthy state.

New Hampshire has also seen a decline in the infant mortality rate from 8.4 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 4.4 in 2012 and a decrease in the number of smokers.

Here are some highlights

-     New Hampshire has one of the lowest sedentary lifestyle rates in the U.S. at 22.5 percent of the population, with 234,000 sedentary adults.

-     In the past year, the incidence of infectious disease decreased from 6.8 to 5.5 cases per 100,000 population.

-     Air pollution decreased in the past 5 years, from 9.1 to 7.5 micrograms of fine particulate per cubic meter.

-     In the past 10 years, the rate of uninsured population increased from 8.5 percent to 11.3 percent.

-     Since 1990, the infant mortality rate decreased from 8.4 to 4.4 deaths per 1,000 live births and is the lowest among all states.

-     It was noted that New Hampshire does have a couple of challenges.  New Hampshire has low per capita health funding and a moderate prevalence of binge drinking.

Congratulations!  I can't wait to see whether Colorado legalizing marijuana moves us up on that list, or down!

Great news for NH the skeptic in me always wonders how they get this stuff and being an analyst in a past life. Oh well, maybe the rest of the country will get on board.

New England states get outside, off the couch and are healthier! But you do have some dangerous ice cream, Ben and Jerry's that is to die for, that has some not so healthy but so so delicious ingredients. Pass the Chunky Monkey or Cherry Garcia please.

Joan,   I did not know about the great healthy effects of New Hampshire.  But I did know that it is a beautiful state and a lovely drive across from ON Canada through to the east coast...I love the Vermont NH route to the coast.  Thanks for sharing some interesting facts!

Joan,

I like that World Health Definition. I was surprised by it, but not surprised that NH came in second. The first time I visited NH I was impressed with the quality of life being offered to the residents of the State. When traveling from IL to ME for my seasonal job in years past, I always felt a sense of pride, security, and home free when I got to VT and NH.

Your post brought back fond memories.
