NEW HAMPSHIRE IS THE SECOND HEALTHIEST STATE IN AMERICA
When the United Health Foundation's annual list came out for 2012, New Hampshire came in Number 2 in the Nation! Next was Vermont ranked at #1 and Hawaii ranked at # 2. Our Neighbor Massachusetts came in #4.
The World Health Organization defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
Factors such as personal behaviors, the environment and community, policies of the national and state government as well as the care we receive are important components of what defines a healthy state.
New Hampshire has also seen a decline in the infant mortality rate from 8.4 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 4.4 in 2012 and a decrease in the number of smokers.
Here are some highlights
- New Hampshire has one of the lowest sedentary lifestyle rates in the U.S. at 22.5 percent of the population, with 234,000 sedentary adults.
- In the past year, the incidence of infectious disease decreased from 6.8 to 5.5 cases per 100,000 population.
- Air pollution decreased in the past 5 years, from 9.1 to 7.5 micrograms of fine particulate per cubic meter.
- In the past 10 years, the rate of uninsured population increased from 8.5 percent to 11.3 percent.
- Since 1990, the infant mortality rate decreased from 8.4 to 4.4 deaths per 1,000 live births and is the lowest among all states.
- It was noted that New Hampshire does have a couple of challenges. New Hampshire has low per capita health funding and a moderate prevalence of binge drinking.
