Rainfall in Phoenix is breaking news!

It always amazes me that a little bit of rain becomes the top news story on all the local t.v. stations in Phoenix.  Last night, the rain and the expected rain pretty much took up the whole newscast at 10:00.

Being from Vancouver, rain was just part of daily life and the conversation started with “When will it stop raining?”.  Here in the Phoenix area it’s “We could sure use some rain” or “I hope it rains soon”.  The rain in Vancouver used to be the reason we always had to have a vacation in the sun planned.  Now, we can’t think of anywhere to go where the weather is more pleasant than here.  O.K., I’ll concede that in the middle of an Arizona summer it’s nice to get away to the coast somewhere to escape the heat for a few days.

When I first moved here I thought the people wishing for rain were crazy.  I moved here to get away from the rain.  Now, six years later, I’m wishing for rain at times too.  I’ve come to understand that the trees and plants do need a bit of rain now and again.  Sure, we all have irrigation systems, but it’s just not the same as getting water naturally.Rain in Vancouver  At least when it rains here it doesn’t rain for long and it’s not cold at the same time as it’s raining.  It’s the cold and wet that gets right into your bones and makes everything start to ache.  That rarely, if ever, happens in Phoenix.    We were surprised to see that kids actually get outside and Rain in Phoenixplay in the rain in Arizona.  Kids growing up here see it rain so rarely that it’s a novelty and they want to romp around in the puddles and the ‘lakes’ that form when it occasionally rains hard during the monsoon in the summer.

One other thing we’ve noticed about weather in the Phoenix area is that there are more storms and it rains more in the East Valley than it does in the West Valley.  So often when we see the forecast for rain and we’re looking forward to rain, it doesn’t happen here in the West Valley.  We watch the news and see that rain is a big story because there’s been a storm or it’s been raining in Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Chandler, and other areas of the Valley.  Sometimes it’s even as close as a few miles away, but it’s missed Palm Valley in Goodyear.  So, if you’re thinking about buying a home in the greater Phoenix area and you want to live where it rains the least, consider houses for sale in Goodyear

I have a second home in Peoria, AZ.  It is pretty funny that rainfall would take up so much time of the newscast.  Valley of the Sun!  My goodness, I would imagine that snowfall would take up the entire half hour!
