I would say in the last 20 years, we have had a major change in the mindset of America when it comes to the timber industry and how we treat it and how we use it. In the early 1900's there was a lot of clear cutting, then there was another change in mindset by the mid 60's. They started to replant what they had cut down and timber become one of our first renewable resources.

They learned to replant and work with the wildlife and not cut complete areas anymore, just sections. As an added bonus, it created fire lines that saved whole communities and a lot of wildlife.

Then in the late 80's and early 90's environmentalist realized that they could stop the timber industry by creating red tape by using the court systems to stop the cutting of trees. This really did two things here in Oregon, one it raised the price of homes, because we had to purchase our wood from other states, like North Carolina, and countries, like Canada, that hadn't abandoned the timber industry.

You see, by doing this, these environmentalists (that I may add live in homes built with wood) have raised the price of new homes, which also raised the price of existing homes, because the supply and demand was forced to rise.

Then another thing started to happen here in Oregon that our court systems didn't think of, but they should have. Our unemployment skyrocketed and our state government and schools started to have problems! Why? Because Oregon had a lot of people in the timber industry, who were paying taxes to our government, who were all of a sudden out of a job!

Complete cities were devastated because the only careers that were in these cities were timber jobs. These homes were not near major cities and the house prices dropped dramatically. These people had to move and sell their homes at a substantially discounted price, because there was no one to buy them and they had no jobs to pay the mortgages.

Oregon has become a very high tech industry state thanks to Intel and other companies like them, but if there is a major shift in that field, Oregon could literally go bankrupt within a year or two. You see the timber industry is needed as we all live in homes made of wood, and if you stop all wood cutting, like some people want we will have no place to live.

So to you environmentalists, until you live in homes that aren't made of wood and can promise every one of the people in the timber industry a job, please shut up and get a real job!

7 Comments on Why we need the timber industry

Todd,

Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel!  I agree with you, having grown up near a town with a thriving timber industry.

There has to be a smart balance between the timber industry and the environmentalists.  I think the timber industry got their act together and use smart forestry techniques to regrow the forests, and I also think environmentalist have a long way to go before they actually help the timber industry.  All those spotted owl and endangered slugs legal battles only helped with major forest fires.  I'd rather see the environmentalists ask "what can we do to help manage the forests" instead of doing underhanded things like spiking trees.

Todd, Unfortunately the environmentalists have a big voice in Washington. Too bad those lobbyists don't make a living working in an industry like wood. They have now effectively made our not so long ago self supporting country into a dependant country.

Todd

The reforesting that is put into great effort is very essential.

Todd, Let me clarify that I do support conservation efforts in order to preserve our natural enviornment but selective cutting can do the same and keep our renewable resource viable as nature intended. I also am talking about the selling of our industries overseas, etc. which has harmed our economy greatly and put us in a position where we depend upon other countries for their exports.

They don't like plastics because that comes from oil.  They don't like steel because that comes from mining.  What do they want the homes built from?

Trees are planted cut and replanted.  They are a crop just like corn.  Are they going to block farmers from cutting corn next?

Jon - I'm not exactly one to hold back when I talk as you can tell! It gets me in trouble a lot and causes me stress sometimes. That is why I left radio, I spoke my mind a little too often and hated always having to defend myself. But, sometimes like here, just couldn't help putting my opinion out there.

Fran - You mean trees and animals are there for us to use? I think it is funny that the people that don't like us to cut trees are the same ones that are vegetarians? Can't cut a tree, but the tomato must die!

Judy - We send so much money to Canada and other countries to import wood, it isn't even funny! Our deficit would be probably cut in half if we could keep the money here in the stats.

Tom - It has been done for years, but the environmentalists don't seem to get that. They want us to go bankrupt by not letting us live.

Judy - I understood!

Randy - YES! Even though that is all they eat!
