Goal Setting Crazies!!!

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams

I set my goals fairly high each year and push to increase them annually.  I reviewed my goals last week for 2008 and was a little taken aback.  I asked myself:

  • What in the world was I thinking when I set these goals?
  • How in the world am I going to accomplish these goals this year?
  • Where am I going to find the energy to complete all these goals?
  • When am I going to find enough time to even work on my goals?
  • Am I crazy?

I then had to calm myself down and remind myself that:

  • I set the goals because I needed to challenge myself into accomplishing more in my business than in 2007.
  • I'm going to break down the goals into categories.  If I have a goal of obtaining 5 listings over the price of $500,000. in one month . . .then I need to look at it as having to get 1.25 listings per week to accomplish my goals.  That just sounds easier to do.
  • Energy . . .one of my goals is to lose weight, sleep more and exercise daily.  If I can break this down to losing a pound or less a week (instead of the total "Secret" amount I want to lose); start adding 15 minutes of sleep per night each week instead of trying to find 3 more hours daily to sleep; and, start walking daily and then build up to an overall workout routine . . . then it just doesn't sound like it's as difficult as I usually make it out to be.
  • Having enough time always seems like an overwhelming problem to me.  Again, I just need to put some disciplines in place . . . schedule when those disciplines are to be completed each day, work with a peer partner to check on each other's accountability each day, and to release some of the workload to others on my team.
  • Do I have the goal setting crazies?  I'm sure I do, but with added effort I bet I can make my goals.

In review I have to remember to break down each task.  It's not 60 listings I need to take this year . . .it's only 1.25 per week or 5 per month.  I think I can do that!  I'll work hard on that concept.

HMMM . . .maybe I can meet my goals after all!

What do you do to put your goals in place and to successfully accomplish them?

Meg & Jim,

Good to know I'm not the only one with the goal crazies.  I posted an article on my blog on setting and achieving goals (Resolutions don't work, but this does!). A business coach once advised identifying the 3 activities you will perform each day to grow your business and do those three things, no matter what.

I am with you. I don't know why I think so high when I set my Goals at first. I always adjust them.

Remember "Too high of goals can suggest failure, and lack of goals guarantees it."

Carolyn - So, what did you come up with for your goals?  I'm glad I was of some encouragement!  Now you have to do your first goal . . .just like me.

Have a great week!

Jackie - I'm so glad that your 90 day program works for you.  I think it would be kinda' tough for me.  I need to make it into a "baby step" situation with the big picture always being there.  I find that Gary Keller's 4-1-1 program works the best for me when I actually follow it.  It's 4 individual weeks of goals - one month of goals - one year of goals.  What you don't accomplish in the first week . . .you try to compensate for and finish in the second week . . .or the third week . . .or the forth week.  What you don't accomplish in one month, you try to finish in the second and so forth.  Your annual goals should be the accumulation of your 12 months, which is the accumulation of the 4 weeks each month.

I hope your first month has been great and that your second month this year is even better!

Tom - Great words of advice!  Each year I stretch a little bit further in goals.  Hopefully, there will be no readjustments this year . . .unless it's to make it better.

Please have an enjoyable day!

Liz - I do have an accountability partner.  Do you?  I may want to change every once in awhile. I make a concerted effort to use the 4-1-1 program.  What do you use?

I hope you have a great year, too.

Michelle - Thanks for the encouragement.  I believe that I can do it, too if I work extra hard at staying balanced and on track.  Do you have a plan . . .and if so, what is it?

I wish you the best in 2008!

Steve - If I understand you correctly . . .you don't have any actual written goals . . .you just "keep on trucking" and go with the flow.  Try writing some goals and let me know in a few months whether or not you have accomplished them.  I think it will make your life easier.

Be good to yourself this year and set some awesome goals that you will accomplish!

Jennifer - Thank you very much for your comments.  One step at a time is what I'm working on. . . the foundation's good . . .so I am just building the business with the set goals.  Accountability works, too.

Thank you for reviewing my website.  We're working on it "real hard" and continually to make it outstanding!  Brad, Leslie, Bobby and the rest of their team at DAKNO have been building the site and urging me to grow as much as they possibly can.  I sure couldn't be doing all of this without them.

Have a fabulous week!!

Greetings from the North Georgia Mountains!

Meg: Great post! If you work hard to achieve those goals, you will no doubt be very successful...even if you fall short of achieving everything you set out to accomplish.

As my favorite philosopher, Yogi Berra, once said: You got to be careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there.

You'll get there!  Keep up the good work.

Hi Meg - Love the list. I just wish I had the discipline to make something like that work for me. I am proud to say I am now swimming at least 2 times a week and striving for 3 mornings a week. I have got to get in better shape.

You wrote: "release some of the workload to others on my team." Have you ever considered letting your team members occasionally "guest" post on your blogs? Just a thought.

Bobby - Someone told me once that no one is truly disciplined . . .that you just have to make it work.  You'll get to 3 . . .then maybe you can do other things on the other 3 or 4 days a week.

My husband has an unbelievable disciple he has set in place for himself.  He does spinning on T,TH, weights on M,W and swims on F. Then he does whatever other workout he decides to do on Saturdays and Sundays.  It makes me crazy . . .and envious.  I keep saying that I'm going to do it too.  I'll have to goal set it into a routine.

I like your idea about guest posts . . . a lot.  I'll have to encourage it!

Thank you for your time and comments.

Have a fabulous weekend!

I'm going to make myself accountable right now.  I did not get a listing last week.  Now I must get 2.5 this week.  How are each of you doing?
