Simple Still Life Photography

This is my favorite post of the day. I like the suggestions to google your camera model number then watch the YouTube videos. I also downloaded the app for my Nikon Camera which has the entire instruction manual. Bottom line, I can access the manual on my iPad any  time as a reference tool.

If the weather is nasty or you are looking to explore your artisitic sensibilities, give still life photography a try. You can make interesting compositions out of things just laying around the house or bring in leaves, flowers or grass like I did here and take a shot.

When we start taking pictures, we usually take photos of friends and family or the obligatory sunset over the neighbors tree. Me too. Love that stuff.

However, you can improve your understanding of your camera operation and learn better over all photo composition by photographing small things in an environment totally under your control. If you get a cool shot you can always print it, frame it and give it to a friend. Makes a better gift than a Christmas coffee mug no? Just experiment with different distances, light, and camera settings

One thing that you can do right away to make your shots look better is learning the rule of thirds which originated in the art world but applies to photography as well. You can learn more about that here on Youtube

Don't forget that you can learn how your camera operates (without reading the manual) and see examples of it in action by searching your camera make on Google, Bing or Youtube. For example I would search: "Youtube Canon T3i Tutorials"

There are dozens if not hundreds of videos that folks have put out there that will help you improve your photographic efforts.

Your experience with a camera will bear fruit as you are taking still photography. Especially these days when the digital image costs nothing to throw away. It used to be very expensive to process the images that we are learning from and make adjustments to what we are doing. Learning can be so much fun especially when it dosn't cost so much.
