Sierra magazine Coolest Schools ranking is open to all four year undergraduate colleges and universities in the United States. The voluntary survey called the Campus Sustainability Data Collector was the result of the collaboration of four organizations:
- Sierra Club
- Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)
- Sustainable Endowments Institute (SEI)
- Princeton Review
For ranking the schools had to fill the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) survey that incorporated a point system with the maximum number of points achievable at 894.5. The points were broken out into eleven categories:
- Co-curricular 69.00
- Education/Research 51.50
- Energy 205.00
- Transport 86.00
- Waste 97.00
- Water 111.00
- Purchasing 41.00
- Food 55.50
- Planning 79.50
- Investing 64.00
- Innovation 35.00
Out of the 96 schools the participated the highest score achieved was 709.17.
