Everyone with a television has heard of Michele Wie. The Punahou High School golfer has taken the profession golf world by storm. Many attribute her success to her privileged private school nurturing. Michele is the total package she is young, beautiful, pleasant and a great golfer. She is exactly what every sponsor and golf tournament organizer dreams of.
Over the weekend at the Sony Open we saw Tadd Fujikawa a 5'1", 135 lb., 16 year old sophomore from Moanalua High School amaze and dazzle the golf world becoming the youngest player in 50 years to make the cut at a PGA tournament. He was the 2nd youngest in history to do it. Tad was so gracious and charming that the news people couldn't get enough of him.
In the end he finished tied for 20th place, topping 116 pros. If he were a pro and not an amateur he would have gone home with $52,455.
There has been some discussion about discontinuing the extra spot for a local Hawaii player at the Sony open. I am sure they were embarrassed when at that time a 15 year won the spot with only 10 entries. I am sure that after Tad stole the show at the Sony Open and probably made it one of the most memorable tournaments in awhile, they may have to rethink that plan. I hope they do anyway.
For those who don't remember Tad from the 2006 US Open, he qualified and competed at age 15. The highlight of the event was he got to play a practice round with Tiger Woods. I am sure that he must have been inspired from that experience.
I haven't picked up a golf club in about 5 years, but all of this excitement locally has got me looking forward to hitting the links again. For those who don't know of my previous golf reputation my nickname was OB-Wan-Kenobi.
I have golf clubs (hand me downs from mom) that I've never used. I wish somebody had gotten me started early in life. I don't get it OB-Wan-Kenobi?
