| You are probably wondering what you should do if your identity has been stolen. First, call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately, and place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. This alert means that any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit. This prevents most of the damage that can ruin you and could stop the criminals dead in their tracks. Many companies do not advertise this, since most just want you to sign up for some sort of protection plan by having you pay large amounts of unnecessary money.
