It's Boxing Day today and it has nothing to do with a sporting event where two people beat on each other until one doesn't get up anymore.
Boxing day is observed in the United Kingdom as well as in Canada as an additional Christmas holiday.
Traditionally, on boxing day, leftovers were boxed up to be given to the needy but in our modern times, boxing day has evolved into a day of shopping for after Christmas bargains much as we do here in the US "the day after Christmas". Boxing day has also been a traditional hunting day in the UK - the hunting has shifted from wild game to goods in the shops.
Germany, too, observes an additional Christmas holiday on the 26. December, named the second Christmas day. However, Germans take their holidays seriously and stores are not open. There is no shopping today as the traditional winter sales will not begin until January. Instead, this is an extra day spent with family and friends or just to enjoy some peace and quiet after the holidays.
Whether you spent today hunting for bargains, munching on leftovers, in the company of friends of family, hope you had a great day!
