With the recent ice storm in several states , many including some of my fellow New Yorkers lost electricity.  This was on the minds of many; and while listening this morning to the local radio station WAMC the question posed to the public was:

How do you cope with a power outage?

Here were some of the responses:

1. One woman said her husband installed a gas fireplace and gas stove to make sure there would be heat and   that they could eat. They would then light a lantern and play board games.  This made me laugh because I wanted an electric stove when we moved into our present house however my husband insisted on a gas stove and gas fireplace for the very same reasons, and I have to admit he was right.

2. One man was rather resourceful, he went down to the run off drain to fill up several pails  with water to keep his toilets functional.

3. The host of the program said he lit his grill and had fun cooking

4.  Others had generators and were able to run a few appliances.

5.  Still others used wood burning fireplaces to keep warm.

This made me think of the recent cutting down of trees by the electric company in Dutchess County; many residents were upset at losing their trees. There was even a featured article on this in the Poughkeepsie Journal.  The power company response was that they were mandated to do this to minimize the electrical outages - the regulatory authorities felt that avoiding outages was more important than saving a few trees.

In any case, this time of year we hear of people dying from carbon monoxide poisioning because of improper use of equipment such as generators and grills. So, although you might experience an outage be careful in your use of the aforementioned equipment.

So tell me, how do you cope with a power outage?

I remember Hurricane Hugo in 1989 which came 200 miles inland to smack Charlotte.  We were out of power for two weeks.  I remember taking gallon jugs all over the place, to whoever had water, to fill them up (the well pump was electric). I remember taking showers at whichever house had power and/or city water.  I remember eating chicken night after night as my mom used up what was in the deep freeze, all grilled!  Ick.  Don't wish that kind of mess on anyone!

Teri: Good reminder that we should always have emergency supply on hand.

Leigh: That was really a bad time, having live through many hurricanes I know what you endured.

Bob: Blankets and warm fires does work, but 8 kids?

George: It is amazing what we can accomplish when facing an adverse situation.

Marci: It is always good to have a backup and I can't think of a better place than Mom's house.

Time to go to Florida. We start the fireplace and listen to a battery operated radio. It is nice quiet time as well.

When the power is out that first 10 minutes it is just an inconvenience but after that we get out the cards (uno, poker deck, board games) grab the kids, sleeping bags and "picnic" in the family room (wood burning fireplace is there. We usually have so much fun my youngest is unhappy when the lights come back on! lol

Freddie-: My family is usually not happy the first hour, but once the candles and the fire is going we too enjoy board games and long conversation.  The children always wanted to hear about what it was like when we were children.  I could go into a long story because I had time on my hand.
