Build Your Brain Better!

Have you ever felt your mind just isn’t what it used to be, maybe you frequently forgot where Build Your Brain Better with Lumosityyou put your keys, can't remember your password or worse forget the name of the client you just met.   I know I have and it concerns me. My father is an Alzheimer patient in that latter stages of that dreaded disease and I certainly don't wish to follow in those tracks if I can do anything at all to stop it.

Today I stumbled onto Lumosity.com an online memory training tool.  The idea is to daily exercise your brain with easy, interactive and fun to use tools.  The individual tools or brain games are customized depending on your current skill levels.

I know that with the ever changing technology and subsequent learning curve memory and retention is imperative to implementing those technologies.  Many of these tools are designed to Build Your Brain Better and help you to retain instruction and develop better memory skills.  The initial offering at Lumosity.com is free then a subscription is required.

Hi Jon, Someone once told me that working crosswords is good for this. Not sure but the sharpest mind I know is my Father In Law and he works them all the time if noot everyday and at 80+ he is pretty sharp. I just wondered if anyone else has noticed that,

Thanks for this tip about Lumosity, John.  As we age many of us think about how important it is to keep our brains in tip-top shape.  Just last night I saw Brain Games for the first time on TV ... fascinating show!

I use "brain exercise" as an excuse to play Sudoku - but will check out Luminosity for some other kinds of exercise.

Thanks!

I also have Alzheimer's in my family so this is a concern for me. I have noticed I am forgetful at times (but I'm also older now) but like some of the other comments I play puzzle games and I also watch my diet. I have cut out certain foods that are believed to contribute to the disease, such as soy, hydrogenized oils and fats, and white rice. I read the ingredients of everything before I buy. I've yet to cut out white flour and sugar entirely (I limit my use), but that's my goal. Exercise is also important, even if just long walks in the neighborhood or local park.

Thanks for the link. I remember that my grandmother had Alzheimer before we knew that word. Just knew she was slowly going. Gotta go to that site and start working!

Hi John thanks for the info.  We lost a mother in law to that terrible disease.  We "excersize" daily with crosswords, Suduko, etc.

Dear John,

The good news is that there is much you can do in addition to brain games. Good food, regular exercise, fresh air, plenty of sleep, alcohol in moderation, not smoking or doing drugs, etc. keep those telomeres in great shape and Alzheimers at bay for longer. Take that for a challenge in the New Year! Not always easy in our busy profession.

John you touched a nerve with many of us my friend. My memory is not what it was. I saw that site and played a few of the memory games but did not join. I am bad about the exercise portion of the "doing the right things list" I should jump on that. Yes, probably all of us have had or have someone close who is struggling with the big "A". All the best to you and hang in there with your Dad.

John, your post has sparked a conversation about the threat and heartbreak of Alzheimer, which has touched many of us. Thanks for that. I pray God's own peace is with your father and family through this difficult time. I love brain games and will find some time to try these.

I can only echo what some others have said here in that I, too, have heard that working crossword puzzles, Sudoku, etc., can have some great benefits for memory and overall brain functionality. My family, too, has been touched by Alzheimer's. I pray for your dad and your entire family as you all continue through this journey.

It is important to keep the mind engaged. Like any muscle, it'll stay in shape if we use it. It's especially important these days with so much media in front of us all the time that keeps us in the position of observer instead of participant. Alzheimers is a dreadful condition. My grandmother had it. Prayers for your dad!
