Scientific studies show that marketing is tied to weight gain!

Well, actually, the studies show that elevated levels of stress often cause increased fat. And since many stagers and designers tell me that marketing makes them feel stressed, I just made the connection.

So to ease your stress (and possibly increase your health and fitness), I've decided to answer some common marketing questions

  1. What are the most effective ways to market a design business?
First, let's define "effective." Effective marketing is creating a lot of awareness about your company - for the least amount of money. The more effective your marketing, the more calls you will get from prospects looking for your services. (Selling the prospects on you and your services is the next step, but first you have to get them to call.)

The most effective marketing techniques for personal service businesses (like ours!) are the ones that create relationships - in other words, marketing that focuses on a specific target audience, includes personal contact, and emphasizes continual customer satisfaction.

Okay, you want the short answer? Here are the marketing techniques that work the best:
    - email newsletters sent at least twice per month (I use www.DecoratorContact.com)
    - calling past customers at least once a year
    - knocking on doors in new neighborhoods
    - mailing personal notes to new neighborhoods and past customers
    - live classes or demonstrations (only if they are done regularly, and then followed up with one or more of the above methods)

  2. What are the cheapest ways to market my design business?
    See all the techniques above.

  3. What are the best ways to get repeat sales from past customers?
    See all the techniques above.

  4. How do I get more clients that I really like working with?
    See all the techniques above.

Okay, this may seem like a joke, but seriously - these marketing techniques work! And if you put each method into your schedule and make a system for yourself, you will be taking away a HUGE part of your marketing stress.

Here's to your marketing fitness!

I agree with everything you said except possibly email newsletters twice a month.  Because I a am a busy professional, getting e-newsletters too often makes me discard all of them.  I do mine once a month.  It is often enough to be consistent, but not too frequently where they feel I am 'bugging them'.

Otherwise I love this blog!

Hi Melissa!

I totally get your point.  Monthly newsletters are often the best way to go.

The only way 2 times / month (or more!) works is if you give REALLY valuable, quick information that your readers look forward to getting.  I started doing WEEKLY newsletters, and I get very, very few unsubscribes.  Many of my readers write to me if I miss a week!

I used to do my newsletter in the traditional way, and nobody was excited about getting it.  Even monthly newsletters got very few opens after a while.

But I studied email newsletters and spent lots of money to learn how to do them EFFECTIVELY, and now my quick, short, weekly newsletter makes me money EVERY time I send it out.

However - monthly can be extremely effective, as well!  It just depends on your audience and what you include.  Many designers tell me that their monthly newsletter is really profitable for them.

I put together a program that reveals a STEP-BY-STEP system for launching a powerful, profit-boosting email newsletter campaign.  You can see details at:
http://www.enewsletterblitz.com/

Thanks so much for your comments!

To your success,
Nika

Nika, thank you so much for all the information. I'm new to the industry and those are great ideas that even I could do! I'm especially interested in hearing your techniques for "knocking on doors in new neighborhoods." I fear rejection!

Nika, you are so right about all of the above. I am one of the once-a-month newsletter people and because it is almost like a e-zine I am happy to do it only once a month.  I did a survey, something everyone should do, and found that nearly 75% of those responding preferred  the current format over shorter articles and that they regularly referred back to what had been written.  That was someting I didn't know.  Will check out your program.  Great post!

I just checked the link you have for DecoratorContact.com.  Did you mean to put ConstantContact.com?  I've been using it for a about 4 years now and find it fairly simple to use.

Great reminder and kick in the pants to get moving!  I have recently realized that I need to remind myself to focus on marketing and networking continually and an enewsletter is something I have thought about for awhile. Thanks!

I think sitting behind a computer marketing your business makes you fat. I have always said GET OUT THERE to meet and greet, let clients put a face behind the name. Realtor presentations have been a huge part of our marketing

Happy new Year
