                                    Chatham-Kent's

' Christmas In Muskoka' raised $40,0000

Chatham-Kent's 'Christmas In Muskoka' looks like it is going to be a yearly holiday event. Last year was the first year and it was a successful beginning. This year nearly 40 decorated Christmas tress were donated to be raffled off.The event is sponsored by the St. Clair Catholic School Board and the proceeds go to support students who attend the Muskoka Wood Leadership Camp held in May. Last year according to Shawn Moynihan, committee chair, 300 Grade 7 students and 120 Secondary school students were able to take part in this Premier Outdoor Adventure Camp, thanks to the 2011 'Christmas in Muskoka ' This year, thanks to the support given to Christmas In Muskoka, 400 grade 7 students will attend. The Leadership Camp is a tremendous leadership experience for these young people. Each new attendee partners with an Ursuline Collegiate College student for 4 days of fun, mentoring and challenging themselves as learn and grow. Zip Lining and Climbing Rope Ladders are just a few of the activities the young people participate in. Shawn Moynihan, Principal and one of the organizers said the Camp is aimed at preparing the Grade 7 students to enter Grade 8 and become the leaders and role models in their schools for the younger students. They learn teamwork and cooperation. and the camp has proved to be a great training experience.

I love young people. They are our future. The Y Generation as they are called ( AGE 13-35), often get a bad reputation. I, unfortunately have heard older people say, they are unfocused and disrespectful among other things. They are a very focused, respectful generation but they have different attitudes about life, work and where they fit in, in the world. Once you earn their respect for instance, you have it! As far as unfocused they are simply multi-taskers and can focus on more than one thing at a time. They may seem to be impatient but remember they have grown up in a microwave society. They simply see the world through different eyes than the Baby Boomers and other generations. We as a society have to understand where they are coming from. As author Steven Covey so aptly put it " Seek to understand before you seek to be understood" I read a book recently that I would recommend to EVERYBODY! It is called ' The New Rules of Engagement ' A Guide to Understanding and Connecting with Generation Y' by Michael McQueen. Do yourself a favor and read it, no matter if you have Y Generation children, grandchildren or you work with some. You will get a different appreciation of the Gen Y's mentality and their great potential. They have grown up in a different time and as a result see the world through different glasses.

Support this great cause and these young people and come out to next year's 'Christmas in Muskoka'
