In 2006 Stadium High School in Tacoma held their 100 year anniversary reunion. Almost 3,300 people attended the reunion setting a world record for the number of people to attend a school reunion. This record will be included in the upcoming 2009 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Here is a link to a blog that celebrates the 100 year history of Stadium High School.

The castle as it is often called was originally intended to be a hotel for the Northern Pacific Railroad. Due to a downturn in the economy the shell of the building was abandoned. There was a fire of questionable origin and the Northern Pacific decided that enough was enough. The Tacoma school board was consulted and Frederic Heath was commissioned to turn the hotel into Tacoma's newest high school. Completed at a cost of almost $500,000.00 Stadium doors opened to students in 1906. At that time the school was called Tacoma High School. The name was changed in 1913 to Stadium in honor of the high schools new bowl.

The bowl has been the site for many sporting events in Tacoma throughout the past 98 years. Babe Ruth played in an exhibition game here. Louis Armstrong performed in the bowl. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Warren Harding spoke in the Bowl. There was even a reenactment of the burning of Rome! On the Fourth of July thousands would gather in the bowl to watch the fireworks display over Commencement Bay. Every Thanksgiving Stadium would play cross-town rivals Lincoln High School in the bowl.

Many of you have seen Stadium High in the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. The building provides a wonderful backdrop for the movie.

Here's a tip of the hat to Stadium as it will now be remembered in the Guinness Book of Records.

Scott- Did you change your photo?

My mom went to Stadium high school and graduated a year early to go on a full Scholarship to Stanford.

My grandmother was a high school teacher there forever! Like since they immigrated to Tacoma from Latvia right after the war. She taught many languages there. She taught Latin! She could speak like 14 languages, at least. Katerina

Katerina- I did change the photo. Still not completely happy with it. It will be fine for now though =)

That is so cool that you have a connection to Stadium! I truly is a wonderful building. It should be the remodel was reported to have cost 125+million....

I am sure that if I were to do some research I could find photos of your mom and grandmother while they were there. I bet that would be very interesting.

Best,

Scott
