I am no expert in tax advise, but I beleive that that you can write off a portion of a trip for education.  So why not travel to Mexico to learn and get a tan.  Also the beer and margaritas are too bad either.  Another big advantage besides the fun and learning is the networking with fellow Realtors from around the US and abroad.

International Living is hosting an event in Cancun on May 28-32, 2008.  You can go to this website to get more information:

Also there is the annual MINT event also in Cancun on June 19-20.  It is advertised as the " the place to make a smart investment in tourism properties".  You can check out that website at:

Hi Krista,

So are you going to attend?  It is interesting that you work in Ashland, Oregon and are marketing Mexico--are really good place to warm up!

Actually, it is not all that odd to be marketing from the US since that is where the buyers mostly likely come from.  If you attend one of these events, you might also learn how to do it too.  Julie Kershner used to work in the Seattle area and moved to Cabo to sell fulltime a few years ago which is another way to make a living by real estate.  Most of the time the total commission is 10% and Mexico does not have restraint of trade laws so you can openly talk about price fixing.

Krista, I'm glad you've been posting about Mexican property. We go twice a year and have considered purchasing a condo, but can't decide on which location as yet. We'll be in Playa Del Carmen the last week in April, otherwise I would have loved to attend the event in May.

I am headed to look at property in Mexico at the beginning of March.  I suspect that some of the trip will be a tax write off.  Probably not the tequila and sun tan lotion though!

You make me wish I was a realtor back in the years it was easy to travel, having a family and being disabled make it a bit more difficult,   Enjoy!

Krista,

Excellent information, I love the Mexican Caribbean.  I hope to take a trip again this year in late fall.  Could you please add me to any of your email lists.  I would like to attend any event that you would recommend.
