The Amaryllis Flower

Amaryllis

The Amaryllis is a very large flowering plant most often associated with Christmas and they are often given as gifts. But be warned, this flower is toxic to cats and some other small pets.

Since many florists sell these at holiday time to be given as gifts, what is often overlooked is that there are over 36 varieties of this flower in different colors and combination of colors.

The white ones with the reddish pink edge are very striking as are the soft pink and white combination.

I don't have any other photos of this flower, because I have only had the camera when I saw the red variety but one day I will find some others to share.

The flower is a very intense red and the texture is almost velvet like. This specimen was rather perfect and I thought it made for a good photo to share.

Hi Than, I haven't tried to grow them as yet but it sounds like it might be fun to do so. I was even considering them for a gift until I discovered they were toxic  to pets.

Hi, William...I first saw an Amarylis when I was a kid and my art teacher had us draw one. I had never seen a flower with a blossom that big! I've loved them ever since! Congratulations on reaching past 1,000,000 points! Have a very happy and healthy new year.

Hi William - Thnks for my red amaryllis fix for this year! One of my daughter has given me one every December for a long time, but none this year, so I'll make do with your photo.  I know they could be a danger to my cats, so I usually keep them in the greenhouse window in the kitchen - off limits to furry faces.
