Benchmarks for the coming year
New Year Resolutions that are trite soon lose traction. Grand visions for major life changes that soon fade, perhaps only to surface as part of the list for following years. They sound good and fill a cultural necessity ~ everyone must have New Year Resolutions - no one expects us to keep them.
Over time, I have allowed resolutions to assume the category of good ideas, reminders perhaps.
Instead, when I plan my furture, I look to benchmarks, something to judge my actions and activity against. These can be words (tenacity, generosity, co-operation etc) or exhortations (never give,in/up, make a mark, be reliable, give value etc).
Approaching 2013, I am aware that no-one owes me a living and that life in general has its usual stack of challenges. What 2013 will bring me is entirely up to me.
My benchmarks for this coming year are Talent and Effort - a recognition of what I am and what I do.
How will you make the best of 2013?
