Benchmarks for the coming year

2013 talent and effort

New Year Resolutions that are trite soon lose traction. Grand visions for major life changes that soon fade, perhaps only to surface as part of the list for following years. They sound good and fill a cultural necessity ~ everyone must have New Year Resolutions - no one expects us to keep them.

Over time, I have allowed resolutions to assume the category of good ideas, reminders perhaps.

Instead, when I plan my furture, I look to benchmarks, something to judge my actions and activity against. These can be words (tenacity, generosity, co-operation etc) or exhortations (never give,in/up, make a mark, be reliable, give value etc).

Approaching 2013, I am aware that no-one owes me a living and that life in general has its usual stack of challenges.  What 2013 will bring me is entirely up to me.

My benchmarks for this coming year are Talent and Effort - a recognition of what I am and what I do.

How will you make the best of 2013?

Larry,

Set up a badge/button web page for 2013.

Also solicit new suggestions for new designs/concepts on that page.

Have a yearly button/badge idea contest winner.

Well said, Larry. Talent and effort are great mantras. The leader of my networking group has chsoen "fearless" as her word to focus on this year.

I think "persistance" would be a good one for me to use.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy and abundant 2013 to you and yours.

JoAnn - "persistance" is surely a great word to get up to each day, and ensures that you will always be in there swinging. All good luck to you for a great year.

I love this, Larry. Challenges are a certainty but they do not define us - how we respond to them does define us.  I wish you a tremendous year of success from your hard work and many talents.

I use benchmarks also rather than resolutions. They are much more realistic. I love the message in your picture. Simple but to the point.

Hi Larry,

Your post is certainly worth reading and pondering. You are such a wise and wonderful man. I had to click suggest because I really do believe more people would benefit by your encouraging words. Many people get stuck on their New Year Resolutions and you bring clarity on the topic that could benefit many.

Living up to our potential is as good as maybe it should get.

I love this post!
