You should work with your roofing contractor, when you are needing a new roof!
Because until there are new standards set and they are enforced, there is a real need to be careful when choosing your roof shingles. One option in choosing them is to avoid fiberglass shingles and using organic felt shingles, which have not shown any premature cracking problems. There has been some organic shingles that have been reported to blister and curl, but this problem is not as widespread as the cracking of fiberglass shingles, and rarely results in leaks or to blow-offs.
Organic shingles have a higher tear strength with good flexibility and with a high resistance to nail pull-through. Usually they do cost more than fiberglass shingles, this is primarily because of their heavier weight that makes shiping them more expensive.
If you should choose to go with fiberglass shingles, do consider stepping up to one that has a longer warranty period. This may help to reduce the chances of a roofing failure, the cracking problem seems to occur mostly among the 20 year fiberglass shingles. Even with stepping up you still can't be sure, mainly because the 25 year and even the 30 year fiberglass shingles have also been known to prematurely fail also.
Most roofing contractors use a Shingle Installer's Disclaimer.
WSRCA has distributed a standard disclaimer form to their members to give to their customers along with a copy of the warranty from the manufacturer.
The disclaimer states usually that the contractor guarantees their workmanship, and not the shingles; the shingles are covered only by the manufacturer's warranty.
Roofing Contractors are also told to avoid saying any thing vague to their customer's like this is a 20 year roof or these shingles will last 25 years.
If the roofing contractor did they may be held to that promise even though the shingle warranty doesn't really say that.
