What We Write Creates a Lasting Impression!
Business plans for 2013 should already be up and running. If your plans include rewriting or revising your direct mail or online presence you might want to evaluate the "Banished Words" list!
Since the 1970's Lake Superior State University has published The List of Banished Words. The tongue-in-cheek Banishment List began as a publicity ploy for little-known LSSU. People from around the world have nominated hundreds of words and phrases over the years to be purged from the language for banishment from the 'Queen's English for Misuse, Over-Use and General Uselessness'.
Some of the words on this year's list:
- PASSION "As in 'that's my passion.' Please, let's hope you mean 'enthusiasm.' 'Passion' connotes 'unbridled,' unmediated by reason and sound judgment. Passion is the stuff of Ahab, Hitler, and chauvinists of every stripe, and terrorists." Salem, Ore.
- TRENDING "A trend is something temporary, thank goodness; however, it is not a verb, and I'm tired of news stations telling me what trite 'news' is 'trending.'" White Lake, Mich.
- GURU "Unless you're teaching transcendental meditation, Hinduism or Buddhism, please don't call yourself a guru just because you think you're an expert at something. It's silly and pretentious. Let other people call you that, if they must." Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.
While this is tongue-in-cheek what we write either online or in print creates a lasting impression.
If you were wondering, Fiscal Cliff topped the 2013 List of Banished Words!
