Put your car keys beside your bed at night!

By
Real Estate Agent with Joy Daniels Real Estate Group, Ltd.

This came as a post on my Facebook and I shared it with my team and thought it was a great idea!  Obviously it won't work for everyone, but most of us keys with alarms on them and it will work for us.  If you sleep in a room that will still allow your remote to work (practice and see!) then you should read this message.

Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents, your Dr's office, the check-out girl at the market..., everyone you run across. Put your car keys beside your bed at night.

If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. keys

This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage.

Even if you are not able to set the alarm remoting from your bedroom, consider using the alarm as a safety measure when you are showing vacant homes or hosting an open house.

If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, or is in a home you are showing or hosting an open house - odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around. After a few seconds, all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

That's a great idea and I'm going to test mine right away.  I also have been through the throes of searching and searching in a mall parking lot and thank you Stephanie for that great idea as well.  Duhhhhh, don't know why I didn't think of that the last time I couldn't locate my car in the WalMart Shopping Center massive parking lot!

Hi Joy --- I have heard this before - it won't work for me as I park my car many floors below me in a condo but I can see how beneficial it can be for many.   The alarm feature on our keys have many benefits as you have noted although hopefully they won't need to be used.   Hope your 2013 is off to a great start.

I heard of this a number of years ago but I'm glad I read through your whole post.  It never dawned on me to use this when doing an open house.  Thank you so much.  Now I won't be as panicked.  Great education.

Why doesn't it surprise me that you live in a condo Michael! :)  I am off to FL for a few days of R&R.

You are welcome. . . my husband was always concerned about me at open houses, but he thought the key alarm was a great idea too!

Thanks for the wonderful tip Joy. Joni re-blogged your post which I somehow missed the first time around. I live in a very rural area, only 10 houses total. I can however see were the nosy from the car alarm would scare the life out of bad guy.

Joy - great, great blog. Missed it the first time around, but found it with Joni's reblog.

Never though of a car alarm as a safety feature. Will have to utilize it during open houses.

Joy, we live in a complex where I hear other car alarms going off periodically, I am good at recognizing my own car alarm, so when similar one go off I am always wondering is it my car or the neighbors?:))

this would be a good idea if people were actually alarmed by car alarms, people don't suspect anyone is in any danger when they hear a car alarm, they just wait until the beeping stops and go about thier daily lives. Unless you make a pact with your entire neighborhood nobody will come to help you and the robbers may or may not run away knowing that ar alams usually go off by accident.
