"Neurologist Daniel Levitin has studied the formula for success extensively and shares this finding: "The emerging picture from such studies is that 10,000 hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world-class expert in anything. In study after study of composers, basketball players, fiction writers, ice skaters, concert pianists, chess players, master criminals and what have you, the number comes up again and again. Of course, this doesn't address why some people get more out of their practice sessions than others do. But no one has yet found a case in which true world-class expertise was accomplished in less time. It seems it takes the brain this long to assimilate all that it needs to know to achieve true mastery." ~Harvey Mackay, author of "Swim With The Sharks"
10,000 hours is a lot of practice! 833 days at 12 hours per day. So years and years. I guess I should keep at the piano practicing. I'm no where near 10K hours!
Christine I did not know about all these studies but my famous motivational quotes are almost word for word what you wrote:) at least the first three quotes:))
Interesting to hear that it takes 5 years. In my early working life it took me about 3 years to achieve unconscious competence or until i didn't have to think about what the right thing was to do.
Hi, John. Wise words, "Choose Wisely."
Hello, Kat. I'm wondering how long have you been playing the piano? Don't give up. My mom still plays everyday and she is 81 now.
Endre, I think there are several ways to say the same thing and make the same point. Sometimes we all just need to be reminded that everything is going to be alright.
Jeanne & Ralph, hang in there!
of course we are from Jersey so we are masters of a lot of things (all good)..we just do not seem to get the credit for such things!!!
What's interesting is how many people consider themselves experts after 10 minutes!
