NOTE: As a thank you for reading this blog post, we are providing you with a free excerpt from Dan Castro’s book CRITICAL CHOICES THAT CHANGE LIVES.

In his 1998 speech on national television, President Clinton retraced and explained the factors that went into his decision to deceive the nation about his affair with Monica Lewinsky when the story first broke.  He said he was embarrassed and feared the public shame disclosure would bring on himself and his family.  But just as with the Watergate scandal, the “cover up” was worse than the original offense.  Deceiving the public was a much greater offense than a private affair.  Had Clinton admitted the truth early on when asked about his extra-marital affairs under oath in the Paula Jones case, it certainly would have hurt him.  He might have had to pay Paula Jones a lot of money, and he ultimately did anyway.  But the possibility of impeachment never would have been considered.  After all, the only two articles of impeachment adopted were perjury and obstruction of justice, not having an affair with an intern.  Why did he choose to lie when the truth would have been much simpler and less costly?  Why did he defiantly challenge the prosecutors to prove he was lying?  Why did he put the nation through such embarrassment?

Figuring out why you do certain things is helpful if you’re going to alter your behavior.  When you come to understand how and why you made certain decisions in the past, you can adjust the criteria you consider important in the future.  When the criteria you consider to be important change, the way in which you make decisions will change.  When you change the way you make decisions, your whole life will change.

Have you gleaned any learning from your “mistakes” in order to improve your overall life?  You can paint your past “mistakes” with new meaning if you are willing to look at them in a new light.  What you did may not have necessarily been a “mistake” at all.  Life is a process of trial and error.  There is only cause and effect.  Remember, there are no “mistakes” or “failures” unless you interpret them as such.  How you choose to view your “mistakes” is the decision behind the decision.

“Everything I did in my life that was worthwhile, I caught hell for.”

Chief Justice Earl Warren

Has it ever occurred to you that in baseball an excellent hitter is someone who fails 70% of the time? That’s right; an excellent hitter is a player with a .300 batting average.  You have to keep swinging if you’re ever going to hit the ball.  If you’re going to succeed at baseball, you have to assume you’ll strike out some of the time.  What if Babe Ruth quit every time he struck out?  Ironically, Babe Ruth held records for the number of times he struck out as well as for the number of home runs he hit.  If you keep swinging hard enough and often enough, you can know with confidence that when you do connect with the ball, there’s a good chance you’ll knock it out of the ballpark.

“Whenever I make a bum decision, I just go out and make another.”

Harry S. Truman

If you quit after your first few failures, you’ll never know the thrill of victory.  When you quit, you deny yourself the lessons those failures could teach you—the very lessons that will bring you to your goal!  You may have misunderstood the whole process of failure.  When you quit, you guarantee the very thing you fear—failure to achieve the goal.  Give yourself a fighting chance.  Heroes keep stepping up to the plate.  Heroes keep showing up for the battle.  Keep learning, and keep applying what you learn to future situations.  When you do this, you cannot help but ultimately succeed.

“Regret for things we did can be tempered by time;

it is regret for the things we did not do

that is inconsolable.”

Sydney J. Harris

As Viktor Frankl firmly believed, “That which does not kill me makes me stronger.”  There is hope.  If you’ve made mistakes or if you feel down, get up and keep going.  You may have many more mistakes to get out of the way before you arrive at what will work.  When you emerge victorious, you’ll be a much stronger and wiser person for it.  Be thankful for all of life’s challenges.  Be thankful even for the “mistakes” you’ve made.

“Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs

even though checkered by failure,

than to rank with those poor spirits who neither

enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight

that knows neither victory nor defeat.”

Theodore Roosevelt

Remember, no decision in the past has as great an effect on your future as any decision you can make today.  You can change your future by starting over right now and by changing the actions that brought about the results you didn’t like.

If you keep a weekly schedule on a calendar, you know already that nothing has as great an effect on what happens next week as what you get done this week.  What you failed to get done last week is irrelevant.  It just puts more pressure on you to work harder this week.  It’s the same in life.  Rather than focus on what you did or did not get done before, focus on what you can get done now so you can have a better future.

The great thing in this world is not so much where we are,

but in what direction we are moving.”

Oliver Wendell Holmes

Are you willing to change your actions in the present in order to change your future?  What amount of energy, commitment and creativity are you willing to invest today in order to get what you want tomorrow?  It’s impossible to drive a car forward if you’re constantly looking in the rear-view mirror.  For just a moment, imagine that it’s now one year from today.  Project yourself forward in time.  A year from now, what will you wish you had gotten done today?
