You Don’t See Something Like This Every Day

We were replacing an old deck with new Trex decking in an apartment community today in Rancho Cordova. The Trex decking was installed over new pressure treated lumber that with last for many years to come. It’s a good idea to clean up the construction dust and debris regularly throughout the day.

When it was time for lunch, I wanted to make sure that I cleaned my hands before eating. When I was at the laundry room restroom sink cleaning up, I noticed that there was something unusual behind the toilet.

There was an electrical outlet in the wall directly behind the toilet. I have seen some strange things in the past, but this one I have never seen. Was it an electric toilet? Was it convenient deodorizer location? I’m not sure, but I have an idea.

It is not uncommon for apartment communities to convert laundry rooms, fitness centers, maintenance shops, business centers and manager’s offices can all be converted and switched to better fit the current management and tenant needs. This was probably the case here. The restroom was added and the electrical outlet never removed.

These changes are often done without a contractor or permits. These projects are usually done on short notice and without a lot of forethought or finances. They just get put together quickly by someone with a little bit of experience in this sort of project.

If you want a professional, safe building alteration, consider hiring a professional and getting the proper building permits before starting the job. Doing things right the first time not only produces a professional look; it is safer and well planned.

I would have never thought of that, but a good point bout the conversion... AND about hiring a pro.

Tom, actually, I see them installed this way "intentionally" to have a place to plug in the heated toilet seat.  I kid you not :)

Practically speaking, what could be so important that you would have to have it while using the toilet? Whatever it is, it requires electricity...that is all I know here...

Have to admit - I've never seen that.  But then again, haven't been looking... Good catch, and seems as if this home is inspected for a future sale, it could become an issue.

Home is where the hearth is.

maybe they were planning on installing one of those heated, bidet seats that squirts your tushie with a mist of warming water?

I dunno, maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I draw the line at attaching my toilet seat to an electrical outlet.

There are electronic toilets with all sorts of facy features including heated seats but I don't recall if they need an outlet or are hardwired.  Either way, it's usually an ultra high-end luxury and not typical in an apartment.

Nice catch Tom. Looks like someone did a hasty job of repurposing that room.

Tom -- that is an interesting find.  Also good deduction as to how it came to be.  Keep up good work (maybe you should ask them why they didn't have you redo that room?)

Tom, I think there is only one answer here that makes any sense.  Just turn this into an electric toilet.  That way... you can be sure it will not be over-used.  One squat, one flush, one ZAP, and you never hear from each "user" again.

It will also cut down on long lines and long waiting periods to use the commode.  What a concept.  You... are a genius!

They are ready for one of those fancy new toliets with heated seats, soothing lights and automatic lids.

Imagine if the toilet starting leaking while someone was on it.  Now that would be a shocking experience.

I think that is very forward thinking – visionary, even.

If someone was to sit on the toilet and read your blog on an iPad which suddenly needed charging…well, there you have it!

Tom: You'd think they would have put a plate over it at least. Strange to say the least.

Thanks for all the comments, so many interesting thoughts. I really liked the electric toilet theme. I think that this was not by design; though the potential for use is present.   :)

I would have covered the outlet with a $2 plate so that no water could penetrate the outlet.....WHOW!
