So starting on January 19th, 2003 the Mardi Gras Parades will start and this year because of Super Bowl XLVII these parades will pause from January 28, 2013 - February 5th, 20012. Parade activity will resume as normal from February 6th to the 12th. New Orleans is going to be packed, restaurants booked, hotels full and it is going to be one big party from mid January through the second week of February. These are some tips from the City of New Orleans website if you will be in New Orleans during this period:
Know Before You Go:Maps showing traffic closures and alternate routes will be posted for each day, as streets around the Mercedes Benz Superdome and near the big events will be affected beginning in January. Plan ahead for parking and street closures.
Be prepared to walk: It’s why New Orleans is considered one of America’s most “walkable” cities, and why we are a favorite for those attending Super Bowls. All the great events are held within reasonable walking distancefrom the riverfront to the Convention Center.
Carpool:For those working in the Central Business District and surrounding areas, we strongly urge you to carpool Super Bowl week, easing traffic congestion throughout the CBD and surrounding areas.
Take public transportation: When coming to enjoy the great events, including the NFL Experience and Super Bowl Boulevard, we encourage you to take public transportation. The historic streetcar will easily transport you to the foot of Canal Street at the Mississippi River, and along the Riverfront from the Convention Center upriver to Woldenberg Park and Jackson Square, downriver. Both the St. Charles Avenue and Canal Street lines will get you there. The Algiers Ferry will transport you from the West Bank to Super Bowl Boulevard.
Go green - ride your bike: With more bicycle lanes being installed, consider riding your bike to the riverfront of the Convention Center. Special bicycle parking will be identified. It’s easy, burns calories and is energy efficient.
Pay attention to traffic advisories: Main thoroughfares, including Decatur, S. Peters and Poydras streets will necessitate turning those streets into pedestrian malls, as determined by public safety officials.
Parking will be limited, so again plan ahead: Lots along Convention Center Boulevard in the Warehouse District and Decatur and S. Peters in the French Quarter will be reserved for event staging and staff parking.
Game Day tip: While the NFL Experience and Super Bowl Boulevard will be in full swing Super Bowl Sunday, avoid the area near the Mercedes Benz Superdome, as much of the area will be closed to vehicular traffic.
The Super Bowl will be held at the Mercedes Benz Superdome which is located at 1500 Poydras Street, New Orleans, LA 70112. The phone number is 504-587-3663 and they are open from 8:30am to 5:00pm. There are many ways to get around New Orleans from Streetcars to Taxi's to Buses...
The City of New Orleans has prepared a page on their website with full information about road closures and ways to get around during the Super Bowl and the days leading up to Sunday, it is a really complete resource, City of New Orleans/Superbowl.
