Yep, it sure was. Now showing real estate in the winter in Montana has its challenges for sure, but this was definitely a first.
We had some clients that were driving through Montana on their way to Arizona. They had called about a beautiful piece of land we had listed and wanted to see it and a few others. I agreed to meet them the next
morning at our local restaurant.
When I arrived, I offered for them to ride with me as I have four-wheel drive and snow tires and we were going to look at some recreational properties where the snow could get fairly deep. They said they preferred to take their own car because they had their dog with them - an adorable lab puppy. So we set out to look at land.
Our first property was just a few miles off the interstate. Everything was going well and they wanted to see the next property so we went to get back onto the interstate. The interstate itself was actually not bad but the on-ramp we were using was pretty slushy. We were both driving very slowly, not over 35 mph.
I got to the interstate and was looking in my rearview mirror to make sure that my buyers were still behind me when I couldn't believe my eyes. Their car was swerving back and forth up the on-ramp and by the time they hit the interstate, there was no gaining control. They hit the snow on the side of the road and went off down the sloping embankment. Somehow their car flipped completely over on its side and then came back upright landing against a tree at the bottom of the embankment.
I stopped my car immediately and pulled over to the side of the road. I thought, this doesn't look good and called my wife who was at home. This part of the interstate has very patchy cell phone coverage but somehow the call made it through. All she could hear was "accident, Lozeau Exit, call an ambulance". I was running towards my buyer's car at the time so was also out of breath. She was quite freaked out of course but called 911 and requested an ambulance be sent to that exit.
When I reached the car, I was relieved to find that everyone was ok, even the dog. The car landed upright and everyone got out and was walking around. Once I knew everyone was going to be ok, I went back up the hill and called my wife back and explained what happened. Her heart was racing but she was relieved to hear that everyone was ok.
The highway patrol arrived first and then finally the ambulance. We called a tow truck as the car was totalled and the highway partolman issued my buyers a ticket. My buyers were in good humor and were just relieved that no one was injured. They didn't feel they needed an ambulance so I offered to give them a ride back to town. We had lunch together and tried to get everyone's blood pressure back to normal after the incident. The nearest town for a car rental is an hour away so I offered to drive them in so they could get a rental car. They said they were most disappointed that they couldn't look at the other properties we had planned to see! They were going to continue on their trip but have plans to come back to look at land - hopefully when it warms up a bit!
Wow that must have been absolutely frightening. I'm glad to hear that everyone was okay and that you wre able to get them on their way home safely.
