The False Alarm may have Saved my Life!

We had the most relaxing Christmas that I can remember in years. No drama, no stress that's why this story I'm going to tell you made no sense to me.

The afternoon of December 26th I was sitting in my comfy chair in my Your Healthbedroom working on my blog when I started having chest pains. I went to the Living room to tell my husband. We talked about it a few minutes as the pain moved from just my chest into my upper back and my neck.

We decided to go to the hospital. I put on my coat and waited for him to gather whatever he needed and to back the car out. During those few minutes the pain went away and I began to feel better. I almost changed my mind. Who wants to look like a hypochondriac?

We went anyway, just to be safe. At the ER they did all the standard tests, EKG, bloodwork and a CT scan. Everything came back negative but the Doctor strongly suggested that I call my own Doctor the next day. I did and was a little surprised that he told me to come in for an exam and a stress test.

This past Thursday was my appointment. I was not concerned. After Your Healthall, the tests at the hospital were all negative and I exercise several hours each week. We run/walk 15 to 20 miles half of which is at Warner Park, and extremely hilly.

Heart scan showed strong heart muscle, blood pressure a little higher than my fall exam. Now for the treadmill. This should be a breeze.

Oddly enough, I felt fine as they increased the speed and the incline. What was unusual, to me, was that she kept taking my blood pressure. Each increase in speed and incline she checked again. By the 4th time, my blood pressure hit 210 over 105. Oops. Even I knew that wasn't good.

Next, the doctor's prescribing a mild blood pressure medicine and telling me to cut back to no more than 2 miles on flat terrain. It seemed crazy to me and I negotiated up to 3 miles. After all, I'm used to doing 6 on the major hills.

I'm totally not thinking at this point. All I know is that I don't want to be attached to medicine the rest of my life.

I head to the pharmacy and drop off the prescription. They are really backed up so I agree to pick it up Friday morning. Your Health

Fridays I lift weights with my trainer. Before starting I warm up on the treadmill. Usually walking 5 minutes.

Today I decided to do a slow run. The first couple of minutes stressed me out but as I relaxed into it I felt fine. Even good.

After a good workout, I head to the pharmacy to pick up my new meds. I have so many questions like why can't I run or do the hills? What should I expect? What side effects might I have? I'm totally not used to taking medicine. Besides, I'm meeting my running partner the next morning for our first run since Christmas.

The pharmacist was a kind woman probably in her mid 30s. She is answering my questions and asking about the results of my tests and about my physical activity.

The more we talked the larger her eyes got. She STRONGLY suggested I start off walking a couple of miles on FLAT terrain until I got used to the new medicine.

The more she talked, the more it finally started to sink in. When I was struggling with some of the hills and trying to push through what was bothering me it wasn't because I was being lazy or a wimp.

My body was talking to me and I wasn't listening. This took our motto "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" to a whole new meaning.

I let my running partner know last night that I'd be walking with a friend today if she wanted to join us. The dog's going. That should keep us at about 2-3 miles per hour!

Your health is one of your most important assets. Take care of it, and it'll take care of you.

Connie, Our bodies do talk to us ... if only we listen and not dismiss what it is telling us. Let's face it ... doctors do not know everything ... I know they do the best they can and sometimes they miss things or get a diagnosis wrong.  I'm glad you are listening to your body and your medical providers.  I hope whatever it is will be behind you soon and you are soon back to your "normal" routine.  Thanks for participating in the contest.

Connie- Health is the new wealth! I'm glad you are taking it easy, walking is great and it sounds like your body agrees with it. You're right, our bodies do talk to us...if only we all listened!

Cheryl - It kind of knocks the wind out of you!

Mary - We're not in our 20s and 30s anymore. When I think of myself running in the woods with my blood pressure that high it's pretty scary. It's not like we could even tell them where we were if we did call 911!

Daniel - I'll be listening much closer from now on!

Bliz - I couldn't agree more. It's why I exercise so much to stay sane!

Joy - My husband has had high blood pressure for over 30 years so we've always been health concious. I just thought I was the picture of health!

Kathy - We came so close to not going. It's scary!

Connie, there are so many gifts of life and you going to the hospital to be checked out is one of them.  Listening to one's body is not so easy always because we dismiss so many things.  Our bodies have the ability to heal themselves as well if we listen to what we are being told.  I know for myself, and your story is a good reminder, I take blood pressure meds plus some other things and I don't like it either but better safe than sorry or sad you did not.  Exercise is such a must and getting there for me is not easy for sure.  Your story also tells me to get moving more.  Thank you so much for sharing and God Bless.

Gloria - How well I know!

Kathleen - We as Women are the worst! We think we have to soldier through everything instead of stopping and listening to our bodies. No more of that for me!

Sajy - I agree.

Emilia - I will gradually get back there. I'm just not going to push it yet!

Amanda - You just can't replace good health!

Mary - My Friend! They say there are NO good chest pains, to NEVER ignore them. I've learned so much in this past week. The future is looking brighter every day! Let me know how the excercise comes along!

Hi Connie- you are one very lucky lady. High blood pressure can cause many problems in our body including kidney failure which is what happened to my brother. Take care and keep listening. :) hugs from Annapolis

Without our health, nothing else matters. I'm so glad you were able to see some warning signs and able to see that there were other signs for you to see.

Connie definitely glad you were smart and went right to the hospital and followed up with your doctor.  Sharing this story will definitely help someone else who may have thought the trip to the Dr. wasn't necessary or toughing it out against your body is the right thing to do.

Beth - To think that  I almost didn't go because I was feeling better, is really scary.

Debra - The Doctor trip was really eye opening. If this post makes one person go to the doctor instead of hesitating, I'll be happy.

Hi Connie, I am just now reading your story, and glad to hear that you took action once you had some symptoms. Waling is not as bad as it sounds, but I know it's big change from running. I can remember when I was first diagnosed with high blood pressure. Your whole life style changes if you want to stay healthy.

Hi Connie, Glad to hear you are feeling OK and sometimes you need to start out slow and then add the running back in next month. Walk and run until you build up to running. That is what I do. I will run a block (short) and then walk a block. Sometimes my dogs set the pace depending on the length or the incline.

Kristin - I had a long talk with my cousin this morning who is a pharmacist. She also understands our family heart history. She gave me the confidence to try runnng by myself this morning. I'll build back up slowly. It's not a race or anything!
