Port Orchard Attic Bedrooms and the Mattress Solution

I live in a 1941 Cape Cod Cottage style home.  I fell in love with its charm and old world character.  It was a “flip” back in 2006.  The home had only 2 owners, the family that built it and then the woman that lived in it from 1944 until 2006 when it was updated and sold.  The home is small looking from the outside but boasts a huge 2340 square feet on 3 different levels.   There is also a one car garage with shop area that isn’t included in the sq ft.

The main level was most likely the only finished level when the home was built.  Luckily this home didn’t go through any remodels so the original home was just brought back to shiny with the flip.  The main level still boasts the original floors, hand-plastered walls, and window spaces (windows were upgraded).  We converted the original fireplace to a wood stove type insert.  Keeps the fireplace character but becomes more practical.  There are still archways and all of the molding and doors are original.

The attic area was finished off in 2006.  There is carpet and new moldings and doors.  There are two bedrooms, an office area and a sitting area up there.  I fell in love with the over-sized bedroom, but not so much with the small closet so I converted the other smaller  bedroom into a walk-in closet.  When we moved in the queen size bed barely fit and the queen box spring had to be cut in half and then re-assembled once up stairs.  The triple dresser with mirror wasn’t going to fit so it had to stay in a bedroom on the main level.  I knew I would need to purchase a new bedroom set if I ever wanted to make the master feel like a master suite.

Lots of older homes with that awesome attic space usually have a very awkward type staircase leading to it.  I am lucky in that the stairs are of normal size and the ceiling after the landing is full sized.

I found a bedroom set that was more sleek than what I had and I knew not to purchase the triple dresser only the chest of drawers, because I knew they would fit up the stairs.  So I purchased several.  I decided to purchase a King sized headboard and knew that it would fit up the stairs, the issue would be the King-sized mattress and box springs.  I decided to do some research and figure out how to get a King bed up to my favorite room in the house.

King-sized box springs are really two over-sized single size so that worked, and there are of course several other types of platforms you can purchase that are easy to move.  But what was I going to do for a mattress.  I thought about a foam mattress but I just don’t like those.  Then while doing some price checking I went to the Mattress Ranches‘ website.  I was really only looking to price check and see what types of mattresses they sold when I saw a photo for a video about a “Roll pack Mattress”.  I clicked and watched and thought – WOW! that would work!!

A couple of days passed and then we went into the store in Port Orchard/Gorst.  I thought I would have to sacrifice quality for this product but we were able to choose a mattress that we really liked.  Watch this video!  You can take these mattresses home in your car!!  Well, we used a pickup.  I knew this mattress would fit up the stairs!! It DID!

So now my master bedroom is actually just like the vision I had in 2006!  There is a King-sized bed up there!!  Everyone said it couldn’t be done, but I did it!

Thank you Mattress Ranch!!

Jo,

That is so neat, I've never seen anything like that. It must make it so easy to get the bulky mattress home.

I was so excited when I saw it.  Getting it home was no worries it was getting it up the stairs!  I wish I could post a photo of the bedroom that emerged from a 1941 attic space - it is amazing!
