Locatedapproximately 60 - km north of the city of Toronto, Lake Simcoe is one of the worlds largest freshwater lakes that freeze completely over in the winter. Roughly 1/2 of Ontario's population is within one hour's drive of the lake and all that it offers.

The lake occupies roughly 20% of its total watershed of 3,580 km2. It is southern Ontario's largest body of water and is part of the Trent Severn Waterway that connects Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay.

Most of the 35 tributary rivers and five major tributaries that drain the watershed originate along the southern boundary of the watershed. These southern tributaries have their headwaters in the Oak Ridges Moraine and run north into southern shores of the lake.

Early Settlers in the Uxbridge area used these many streams and rivers to supply power for lumber and grist mills. While some dams have been replaced over the years as flood control, the remnants of some of the old dams still remain.

Kathy~Those are some great prizes for the winners!  My sweet hubby would love to be there. He hasn't been ice fishing for quite a while. This is an excellent localism post and I love the presentation.

There was a joke about a guy who got carried away and built an elaborate smelt fishing shack on a tidal river estuary here in New Brunswick. He kept adding on until it was too big to get back to shore. Then wanted to list it fast for a quick sale, before the spring break up.

Julie - Come and enjoy the great wet soon to be white again north, let him fish, if he wins you could have a paid vacation.

Larry - The question is did he get it sold in time or did his dream just drift away in the spring as dreams are known to do.

Kathy - I think ice fishing would be a blast!  I always think of that movie "Grumpier Old Men" and their ice fishing escapade.  Seriously though, that is a nice prize and sounds like fun for all.

Fascinating info about Lake Simcoe, Kathy.  I didn't know a lot of these things and especially didn't realize that you are only 25 minutes away from the lake....I think I better dig out a map and get better acquainted with that area of Ontario!

Hi Kathy,
Like Candy, ice fishing always brings visions of "Grumpier Old Men".  Sounds like fun and a challenge.

Kathy, you are going to reinforce that great white north/Eskimo/igloo image some of our friends to the south have of Canada!    (I'd love to chat but I have to go put on my mukluks, parka and hunt for my dinner now...)

Candy - Ice Fishing and and "Grumpier Old Men" a very good combination as any of the old boys certainly can get grumpy if the catch of the day eludes them

Jo-Anne -  if you look at the satellite shot I live in the lower right hand corner only about 10 min from the lake. It's a great place to be in the summer time, we can pack up all the grandkids and have a great time on the beaches.

Cynthia - The challenge this year is our weather is not co-operating which in turn may cause issues with the ice thickness. Occasionally some do not check with the locals before parking their vehicles on the ice and they end up having to get them towed out.

Marg - LOL Now who is giving the "great white north/Eskimo/igloo image"  a boost. With all the spring thaws we've had already this year our current snow level is only about 3" even with the big storm on Friday that hit Toronto but seemed for the most part to miss us.

Kathy,

My family used to run the Peers mill. I am wondering how you were able to get one of those flour bags. I have one myself but am interested in getting a few more. any help would be great
