What Do You Do When You Make Changes To What You Are Doing And It Fails?

Earlier this month I have posted three blog suggesting ways to improve our marketing and our production, examining ourselves, examine our marketing stratigies, and suggesting ways to improve newsletters.  But What Do You Do When You Make Changes To What You Are Doing And It Fails?  Do you give up and scrap it, or do you stop and evaluate why what sounded like such a great idea did not work for you?  Is it possible that method or strategy that worked for someone else will not work for you?  Or did the methods and strategies fail because of how you implement them?

A mistake that I have seen many sales people make is that they try to be someone that they are not, instead of being themselves, let me explain.  The exact Methods and Strategies can be carried out successfully by two different people in different ways.

In order for a Method or Strategy to be successful it has to reflect you and not someone else.  If you try to execute a Method or Strategy like someone else, and it does not feel comfortable to you, then it will not reflect who you are and it will fail.  Example, I am a Loan Originator, and as a Loan Originator it is very important that I stay in touch with my referral partners.  For me the majority of my referral partners are Realtors.  So my objective is to stay in touch with them, but how I go about doing it has to both reflect who I am, and feel comfortable to me to be successful.

I feel very comfortable waking into a Realtor office without an appointment, and striking up a conversation. Many Loan Originators do not feel comfortable doing that, so does that mean that they should not call on Realtor offices, absolutely not.  All it means is that they have to do it in a way that fits their personality, and in a way that is comfortable to them, like maybe make an appointment before stopping by.  How you do it is not important, what is important is that you do it.  You are not someone else, so do not pretend to be someone else.  Be you, but be the best you that you can be.

Take all the great ideas that you hear about, and read about, then make them yours.  So when you read my blogs or anyone elses blog with what appears to be a great idea, think of how you can make it your great idea.  If you can do that then the answer to the question What Do You Do When You Make Changes To What You Are Doing And It Fails? Will be an easy one to answer.

Besides being something you are not, many people change based on what they want to be and not what the customers want. Do what the client/customer wants, within your parameters so it is natural for you, and try it that way. Then give it time. Most people simply give up too soon.

George...I stop and re-evaluate my message and audience and usually correct/change something before totally scrapping the idea/process.  If I thought it was good enough to spend time on it to begin with then I will shake the trees some more.  If after the second attempt it still looks bleak, I move on.

The main thing is to keep thinking and keep changing.  Stagnation is the worst thing anyone can achieve.

Excellent advice again George. 'own' what you do and like you said, 'make it yours'.  You have to give something at least 6 months, we think a lot of people including ourselves, give up too soon. Like you said though, just do something that is comfortable to you.

George, you have hit it home with your posts!   Each and every marketing tactics have to be chiseled to your personality.   What works for someone else, may not work for you.

As someone long ago once said, "Know Thyself". Know who you are, your strengths and weaknesses, how you go about doing things, and how you react in adversity. If you do, then the chances of you trying to be someone you're not, or do something in a manner that's foreign to you, will be lessened. But, you'll also know what to do in the event something needs to be changed, as well. Great post, and suggested!

George, your post makes so much sense and way too many people try to be who they're not...not a recepie for success.

Dennis, I agree giving it time, and making it you are extremely important

Fernando, that is a good point.

Anita that sounds like a good process to me.

Kathryn changing with the times is good, but as long as something is working then my advice is to keep doing it until it stops working.

All and Peggy like you said you have a good feel if something is going to work or not after 6 months as long as you honestly have worked it.

Joan I learned that very early on, and pass that message on to all the Loan Originators that I manage.

Pat and Wayne, people see it when you are trying to be something that you are not, and it does not work for them or you.  I know that the two of you know who you are and that is one of the reasons why I enjoy working with you.

George, in any business marketing it's all about comfort zone. If you're not comfortable with the approach it will come through and the effects will be terrible

Ed, that is very true, but it some times takes some new sales people a little time to understand that.

You are right.  What a great post.  I too am comfortable just approaching people but not everyone else is.  If you do what your are comfortable doing, it works better.
