Social Media vs Live Conversation

I agree with this sentiment. It is amusing to watch all the phone interaction in the coffee shop. Quiet as can be because everyone is looking at and absorbed in their cell phones. Wonder what are ancestors would have thought of this. Hmmmm!

Social Media vs Live Conversation

I was watching a program the other night that showed an experiment amongst four young female roommates who were asked to give up any social media interaction (iphones, etc) for two weeks. The results were quite interesting. One young lady actually felt a headache coming on within a half hour after giving up her right to text! They all suffered withdrawal, but what was wonderful to see was that they decided to have LIVE conversations with each other and felt a long lost connection. One girl found herself talking to a stranger sitting next to her in a restaurant. Imagine that!!  So, it wasn’t just about communication, it was about

INTERACTION

Which seems to be missing often today. I believe that with Facebook, Twitter, etc. we have the immediacy of touching bases with our whole social address book, BUT it’s also less personal and certainly addictive.

In our work world, certainly it’s EASY to send a text, or e-mail. But, you can’t see into someone’s eyes, read their body language, and formulate opinions about the nonverbal communication they're sending without having a one-on-one with someone LIVE AND IN PERSON. You can be much more effective in understanding your clients when you’re really with them. Emotion and intent can be misconstrued by words on a phone or laptop because the intended  perception may be different from sender to recipient.

Isn’t communication what we all need?  But, we also need human interaction. It’s a proven fact that babies, if not held and cuddled grow up to have more behavioral issues than those who are held regularly, given physical affection and attention by their mothers and other humans.

Really my point is: don’t lose touch with your fellow humans!

My best leads are always face to face. At a minimum a phone conversation. The success rate is just much greater.

Cheryl, I'm most appreciative of you passing on the message that the Human Factor NOT the Text Factor makes a big difference!

So glad that you agree with this sentiment. We shall overcome!!!
